the black eyes with ghostly white inside are probably a side effect of being a powerful necromancer, and/or acquiring a specific skill linked to necromancy. As the goblin lord had such black eyes, I doubt this is a mere illusion. However, his initial eye color was probably violet, and I do not doubt he can cast illusions to go around incognito. He feels to pragmatic to waste magic energy just to appear with spooky eyes (no matter how insignificant the mana expenditure would be for him).
