The Riverfarm [Farmers] that raised Durene show up, trying to convince Laken to move away from Durene, but he's stubborn and even shields her from playing children by telling them to go away - which they do. When Farmer Prost comes after that incident, he "slips" and tells Laken that Durene is actually a half-troll.

Laken calms her down and reassures her that he will stay with her, telling her that she isn't worth less just because of her race. She storms away from the house, and Laken follows her. He naturally gets lost in the forest, but stumbles over a hidden treasure. That is the point where they become really close.
