| The chapter mainly focuses on [[Ryoka Griffin|Ryoka]]'s preparations for the winter solstice though it also touches on [[Erin Solstice|Erin]]'s own preparations. Ryoka has a series of tasks ordered by importance that she wants to accomplish:

| To accomplish these, she set aside time for meetings with many people around the inn. One meeting was with [[Hedault]] who had the Ironwood wand Ryoka gave him in exchange for the [[Horns of Hammerad|Horns]]' gear. This wand had a seed of a dryad in it though, so Ryoka needed it back. Hedault hates altering already made deals and he has made his livelihood and class based heavily on this wand, but when Ryoka explained the fact that the wand was based on a living being, he agreed to give it back. In exchange, Ryoka gave him the [[Oberon|Faerie King's]] obols and let him look at enchanting the [[Faeblade]]. Besides Hedault, Ryoka also met with [[Ysara Byres|Ysara]], Erin, [[Taletevirion]], and [[Rags]] among others. All of them discussed different topics with Erin and Ryoka fighting about Tyrion, Rags wanting to learn new [[Earthers|Earther]] technology, and Ysara and Taltrevision mostly talking about the plight of Turnscales. [[Nerry]] and [[Shaestrel]] were present for all of these meetings mostly as observers and on Shaestrel's part often in order to tell Ryoka if she was doing something stupid.

| Erin also had some preparations detailed. She had been making new magical food and slowly gaining her strength back through dancing. At the end of the chapter she was also challenged to a chess match by Shaestrel.
