Rags dreams of Velan the Kind on Baleros, of his time when he was a still Goblin Lord and fought first adventurers, then whole companies, before he was driven and defeated and started to swim for days and weeks on end. She struggles with the meaning of the dream, and how it relates to her tribes situation. They’re currently being harried and herded by Lord Tyrion’s cavalry, but to what end she doesn’t know. When one of the human nobles kills one of her hobs she is incensed, but unable to do anything that wouldn’t cost far more goblins. She confides in her confidantes, but then has an idea to make them pay; this idea rubs her somewhat wrong though.

Meanwhile the human riders can barely keep up with their task. The young Lord Gilam chafes under the orders given to them and harries the goblins beyond reason, leading a Hob to retaliate. She is killed, but Gilam is only able to retreat under the protection of his entourage. Lord Pellmia rebukes his hotheaded son. Meanwhile Rags’ plan bears fruit: a nearby forest is set ablaze, cutting off riders that had followed the goblins, among them Gilam. Rags leads a retaliatory strike against the riders, defeating them. Pellmia races to rescue his son, but comes too late; he bears witness how Rags doesn’t kill the his son before his eyes, but instead she raises her crossbow out of the lordling’s face and retreats.

Gilam of course feels dishonoured by the goblins stealing his horse and gear and demands a sallying force to retrieve them, led by him, to teach the goblins a lesson. Pelliam is less than impressed. Even in light of the mercy granted to him and his son, he considers his opinion on goblins not swayed, but a seed of doubt was sown.

The goblins distribute the loot, and the lieutenants share their opinion on Rags’ deed. Their chieftain doubts her action today will change things, but there’s hope.
