This chapter follows Daly Sullivan, an Australian who was transported to Baleros and became a member of the United Nations Company, a group of Earthworlders struggling to survive. The story alternates between his past and present, showing how he and his companions adapted to life on a brutal continent filled with war and danger.

In the past, Daly and his fellow Earthworlders, including Ken, Luan, Geneva, and Paige, struggle to find ways to support themselves without resorting to mercenary work. Caroline, a fellow Earthworlder, attempts to write and sell erotica featuring Balerosian races, but her sudden disappearance serves as a grim reminder of the world’s dangers. Eventually, the United Nations Company splits, with Quallet and his mercenaries pursuing combat-related work while the Earthworlders attempt other means of survival.

Daly and Paige, recognizing the need for self-defense and a sustainable income, develop large wooden crossbows that are easier to manufacture than traditional weapons. These weapons become a signature tool for Daly’s adventuring team, the Bushrangers, who adopt stealth tactics and ambush strategies rather than engaging in direct combat.

In the present, Daly and his team execute a nighttime ambush against Stelbore, armored boars with steel plates, using their crossbows and poison-tipped bolts. The hunt is a success, demonstrating their proficiency in using ranged combat and guerrilla tactics. Afterward, they return to Talenqual, claim their bounty, and encounter a Dullahan adventurer group that accuses them of stealing a contract. Daly successfully diffuses the situation using diplomatic skills learned from Ken.

The chapter ends with Daly and his team returning home, reuniting with other Earthworlders, and settling in for the night by watching ''The Martian'' on one of their few remaining laptops. The contrast between their desperate struggle for survival and the remnants of their old world highlights their longing for home. Daly, though an adventurer, cannot escape the trauma of past battles, his mind and body still haunted by the violence of Baleros.
