*[Templar] - Armored warriors of faith. Seen as more complete.
Being and becoming a Knight
Possible factors in becoming a [Knight] are:
* Being a [Warrior] or fighting [Rider] of a certain level. (known exception: Durene was a low-level [Farmer] before being appointed a [Paladin])
* Being heavily armored and/or mounted. (Most [Knights] follow that description. Also, [Camel Knights] would otherwise just be [Camel Riders] or [Warriors] sitting on a camel.)
* Having a dedicated mindset and code of conduct. (not necessarily one of honor and chivalry, as can be seen with Toren)
* Being inducted by other [Knights]. (as would be the case with Rabbiteater, and most [Squires])
* Being appointed by Royalty. It can be done at their discretion if they are in anonymity, but would otherwise require permission of the throne, as it would induct the knighted into the nation's Order. (as has been seen with Brunkr and Durene)
*Performing a ceremony of knighthood. (as seen with Norman)
Most [Knights] seen in the storyline of the Wandering Inn are Humans, although the class is not race-restricted. Drakes have been said to not gain the class, similar to Gnolls - however, this just seems to be a matter of custom and accessibility, as Brunkr was able to gain the class. Instead, it seems that [Humans] are trying to not make the class available to most other races. Aside from those already mentioned, Goblins may also gain the class. Some other races also seem predisposed to have [Knights], but have not been witnessed to have any: Centaurs have [Lancers] as their heavy cavalry instead. Dullahans seem less comfortable with riding and apparently excel in [Armored] combat classes (some strive to become War Walkers, with special classes like [Juggernauts] and [Behemoths] among them). Half-Elves, Dwarves and String People are races extremely close to the Human build, as well.
Normally, the recognition of a new Knight Order requires substantial representation such as at least a hundred members of pre-existing class, and may include the credentials of a notable chivalrous individual. The bar for the minimum amount of members in a new Order was raised to two hundred on Terandria after the formation of the Order of the Hydra, and remains lower on other continents which have less [Knights], but Izril, Baleros, and Rhir still need special dispensation to establish a new Order. Chandrar maintained that the amount of [Knights] in good standing needed to pledge to form an Order were as many as there were Shield Kingdoms, which is currently four plus one leadership role, for a minimum of five members.
One can declare an Intention of Familiarity, or Intent Valoris, which requires at least two [Knights] wishing to form an order and expressing interest in the same causes. An Order can be declared via crusade-law, which can be invoked by Virtue Familaris. A Knight Order can be convened anywhere with enough authority, regardless of where they were declared to have been formed.

*Some species have more difficulties becoming [Knights]. Gnolls get hot in armor due to their fur. Lizardfolk are too light, and their Naga evolutions cannot ride horse. Drakes have trouble with tail armor, and have a harder time horse riding because of of those same tails.
*[Knights] were a necessity in the times when Dragons roamed all of Innworld. In fact, their current numbers are much lower today than in the times millennia ago.
*Under the Havingtel reign, 300 years of knightly service entitled de facto entry into the nobility. This was of course not achievable for any race whose lifespan was too short.
