Pyrite was the former Chieftain of the Gold Stone Tribe, the second-in-command of the Flooded Waters Tribe, and a student of Greydath.
Pyrite was a large Hobgoblin with multiple layers of fat protecting him.
Pyrite avoided conflict unless absolutely necessary but was willing to be vicious if it meant survival. Pyrite was willing to make himself an object of ridicule to defuse a violent situation and was especially protective of goblin children.
Pyrite thought himself to be mentally slow and stupid. In actuality, he could be better described as lazy and allowing his mind to wander. Despite his self-perception, he demonstrated intelligence and tactical thinking on multiple occasions, and was capable of conversing intelligently and with logic, even arguing semantics with Welca Caveis. He was naturally curious and asked questions to expand his knowledge. Rags thought him "quite sharp at times". Greydath praised his intelligence.
He was intensely loyal to Rags, bodily protecting her even right after being defeated and absorbed into her tribe. He was her most stalwart supporter, speaking in her favor in the goblin councils that met without her. He believed her flaws were temporary and even thought she might someday become a Goblin King.
When he was young, he had dreamt of walking in Human cities and seeing what they did when they weren't hunting Goblins. He still dreamt of a day when Goblins would live freely. He had an interest in poetry and enjoyed chewing on objects such as rocks, bark, bar soap, and cool coals. He had a strong moral center, as he did not accept the assault perpetrated against human women by Tremborag and other Mountain City Goblins.
Pyrite once lived in the Mountain City Tribe. During his time at the Mountain City Tribe, Pyrite was mentored by the Goblin Lord Greydath of Blades, but was unable to pass Greydath's "basic" training. He did manage, however, to learn how to anticipate where and when an opponent is going to hit. He was press-ganged into being a [Warrior] and [Scavenger] and later a full-time [Scavenger] when he discovered his talent at finding precious stones. He worked with a [Scavenger] called Stickhair, a childhood friend, and eventually entered a non-exclusive sexual relationship with Stickhair. He sometimes brought her stones that he had carved.
Pyrite eventually left the mountain because he felt very uncomfortable living there due to the custom of taking human women as sexual prisoners. He left when he was five after having a fight with Greydath, with the goal of becoming a Goblin Lord.
He started a tribe called the "Mountain Fierce Warriors" tribe which grew to be very large, containing thousands of regular Goblins, and trained Hobgoblins to fight. In Pyrite's own words, his tribe stood out too much and picked too many fights, which led to Humans nearly wiping out the tribe and killing him. After this, Pyrite gave up and wandered, eventually forming the Goldstone Tribe.
As [Mining Chieftain] of the Goldstone Tribe, Pyrite avoided violence as much as possible. He hid away from humans, cultivated an interest in rocks, and kept from massacring the occasional Bronze and Silver rank team to avoid attention. He kept to mining gemstones and gave most of them away to the children of his tribe.
The Flooded Waters Tribe absorbed the Gold Stone Tribe in the winter after Erin Solstice's arrival. They assimilated Pyrite and his Goblins into the tribe with minimal losses after they had the tribe surrounded and Rags had shot Pyrite in the chest.
As the Garen Redfang challenged Rags soon after to a duel, she refused to both surrender or fight him directly. When Garen tried to kill Rags for that offense, Pyrite stepped in and took the hit instead of his new chieftain. He even persuaded most goblins of his tribe to stay with Rags.
