Durene Faerise is a half-Troll [Paladin] and Laken's consort.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

She has brown eyes,[1] gray skin with cracks, and is around six foot six or taller.[2]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Durene is simple-minded but kind-hearted. Despite often mistreated as a child for her half-Troll heritage, she is willing to help others in need. She lacks confidence in herself and is often hesitant in manner, which stems from an inferiority complex for being a non-Human. However, this has since improved with Charlay's encouragement to stop thinking of herself as Human and to embrace her Troll heritage.

Background[edit | edit source]

Durene's Troll father died fighting an adventurer soon after impregnating her Human mother, who lived alone near Riverfarm. When she was four years old, her mother died. Afterwards, Durene was taken in by the village, though she returned to her mother's cottage when she came of age[3] She remained in that cottage and avoided interacting with the village. This led to her illiteracy and low intelligence.

Chronology[edit | edit source]

When she first met Laken, she did not tell him she was half-Troll. When winter arrived, Yesel and Prost Surehand, [Farmers] from Riverfarm, tried to convince Laken to come to the main village for safety, but Laken chose to remain in Durene's cottage. After Laken became an [Emperor], he granted her the [Paladin] class, and she followed Laken when he traveled to Invrisil to find adventuring teams to aid Riverfarm.[3]

After she was wounded in the battle of Lancrel while trying to kill Pyrite, Durene stayed in Riverfarm while Laken joined Tyrion Veltras' army to attack Liscor. She opposed his choice to take Goblin prisoners instead of killing them. She has advocated in favor of killing the Goblin prisoners multiple times. She disagreed with Laken's founding of the Goblinlands, and is unwilling to consider the possibility that Goblins are people. Her simple-mindedness and inability to engage in introspection prevents her from seeing parallels between herself and Goblins. This was the first instance of her disagreeing with Laken and remains a significant point of contention. Despite some of Laken's other advisors becoming more open to the idea behind Laken's founding of the Goblinlands as the Goblins began to trade ore for supplies, she remains adamantly in favor of killing them all. Her currently role in Riverfarm is largely that of a laborer, using the significant strength conferred by her monster heritage to perform manual labor, since her mental deficiency precludes her from taking on more complex roles.
