First Appearance

Chapter 5.01

Felkhr is a Gnoll who lives in Pallass. He is infamously known as the Flying Gnoll for trying - and failing - to fly by jumping off the walls as a hobby.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

He has dark black fur,[1] with lighter brown striped fur along his ears, and some colorful white splashes of color across his paws and arms.[2]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Felkhr is incredibly persistent -and obsessive - in his desire to fly, despite failing to do so for over a decade while enduring ridicule and criticism from others. However, he often undergoes bouts of frustration and depression at his failures, especially after the debut of the Wind Runner and Archmage Valeterisa's feat of lifting Fissival. Felkhr has a strong sense of independence, refusing to accept any shortcuts or help to build his flying contraptions, seen in his determination to create his own mechanism of flight distinct from Earther methods, and even rejecting funding and a position in Pallass' Engineer's Guild.[2]

He is very clever, evident by how he was able to recognize the function and ability of a bicycle gear system with one glance. Due to spending most of his finances on building flying contraptions, Felkhr is miserly with his coin, though he always leaves a weekly silver coin tip at Tails and Scales.

Background[edit | edit source]

Felkhr dreamed of flying, and worked to achieve his dream by designing and crafting various flying apparati. This has caused him injury several times, and his jumps from the walls unsettled people and made them worry that he would set a bad example to children. As a result, citizens protesting his experimentations before the Assembly of Welfare, demanding that he be banned from further testing or even exiled if he refused. A public forum was convened, but ultimately the Assembly let him keep experimenting, but required him to attend regular appointments with a [Thought Healer] since. It was implied that Chaldion, who met with Felkhr during the forum, was involved in the Assembly's decision. Felkhr admitted to lying to his [Thought Healers] so that they did not dissuade him from his dream.

He used to be a Journeyman in the Engineering Guild before he quit. He worked as a Floor Lift Operator to finance his experiments.[2]

  • Originally, in Chapter 7.11, Felkhr was stated to be a new guest at Tails and Scales, invited after the Frost Wyvern attack at Pallass. However, after the release of Interlude – Innovation and Invention, he was retconned to have been a frequent diner and close acquaintance to Rufelt Owelt and Lasica Feltail, having known the two long before they got married.
    • Original Text
      • The Gnoll, who was a new guest tonight, nodded. He was the Flying Gnoll of Pallass, another one of those faces. Rufelt had invited him to Tails and Scales after the Wyvern attack.
    • Revised Text
      • The Gnoll, who was a guest tonight, nodded. He was the Flying Gnoll of Pallass, another one of those faces. Rufelt had invited him to Tails and Scales after the Wyvern attack for free food, but Felkhr was a regular. He had stopped coming as much when Tails and Scales became fancy, but their encounter had brought him back into the bar.

  • (To Erin) “That’s me! The Flying Gnoll of Pallass. But that’s just a hobby. You attacked that Wyvern to distract it.”
  • (To Evink) “Yes. Actually, they call me the ‘Flying Gnoll of Pallass’, yes? I have this project—I’m trying to fly, so I jump off the walls—I haven’t flown yet, but I haven’t died yet—”
