First Appearance

Chapter 8.00

Merdon, also known as Crowdcaller Merdon, is a Named-rank Adventurer, captain of the Shield of Tenbault - a Named-ranked team - and the Healer of Tenbault's bodyguard.

Appearance

He is a huge, barrel-chested man with dark skin. He has a prodigious voice, one that makes his speech seemed as though he was exhorting someone by the sheer suppressed volume. He wears an azure armor, marked with the Healer’s sigil; a palm holding a bloom in white.[1]

Personality

Merdon is a commanding and forceful figure, his blunt and direct manner shaped by his habit of being the loudest voice in the room—if not the entire city. He is extremely arrogant, which was one of the reasons why he and Orchestra had a falling out.

As the Healer of Tenbault’s personal bodyguard, he and his team serve as the primary line of defense between her and the throngs of sick and desperate, paying little heed to pleas, status, or attempts at negotiation. He sees the role as a relatively comfortable position and is determined to maintain it, though he briefly expressesed a wistful nostalgia for the days when Hekusha was more selfless.

Background

Merdon used to be a member of the Orchestra of the North since he was a Bronze-rank, but had a falling out with them in a fight that blew out all of the windows in The Adventurer's Haven and half of the eardrums of everyone present. He became Named-rank following that and found work guarding the Healer of Tenbault.[2]

He once fought in the Bloodfields against the Drakes. Despite doing plenty of damage, he never appeared again, with Ilvriss Gemscale speculating that the Walled Cities had made him an offer to refuse, or he had realized he would become a candidate for assassination.[3]

Quotes

  • (To Pisces) “No exceptions! I don’t care if you’re related to the King of Destruction himself! No one enters without a pass guaranteeing the Healer’s treatment! And those are nigh-impossible to get, even for a Gold-rank team. Try to get in again and you’ll suffer for it, boy.”
  • (To Yvlon) “Unless she’s here, you’re not getting in, Miss. And frankly, I’ve seen enough desperate Gold-ranks try to take a run at getting in. You want to try it? The next time, not even the Healer will be able to help your friend.”
  • (To everyone) “Attention to all those gathered to see the Healer of Tenbault! The gates are closed and no force of arms will open them! Any intruders will be dealt with without mercy! The Healer will only see those with a pass—which can be obtained in lottery if you have not one yourself! All those gathered, disperse unless you have proof of entry!”
  • (To everyone) “Calm down? The Antinium are infesting our lands, and you want me to tuck my tail behind my legs, Byres? An army’s right here! If none of you have the stones to take them on, I’ll do it myself! Any true Humans of the north will have my back. Do you think I fear a thousand Antinium? Ten thousand? I am Crowdcaller Merdon.
