Bastam joins [[Jurix]] and [[Ophelia]] to aid the Wistram students who had been ambushed by pirates out at sea.

He and a small group of other influential mages are introduced to Ceria by her mentor, [[Illphres]]. He is one of [[Wistram Days Challengers|five mages]] that came together to challenge [[Cognita]] in hopes of opening the doors to the upper levels of Wistram. <ref name ="Pt. 7">[https://wanderinginn.com/2017/11/21/wistram-days-pt-7/ S03 - Wistram Days (Pt. 7)] </ref>

On the day of the challenge, Bastam and the others deliver their final words to Ceria, their only witness and helper. He remembers Ceria's first year exam, and declares that he and the other mages would show her that they also had what she had shown them that day: courage and daring.<ref name="Pt. 7"/>

Bastam and the others die to Cognita and the four other [[Golems|Golem]] guardians. Their bodies, not all entirely in one piece, are stored in [[Bag of Holding|bags of holding]] by a group of Golems that carry away their remains. Their bodies are placed in a room dedicated to disassembling corpses. Before the Golems could begin processing their remains, Pisces reanimates the challengers' corpses. They rise as [[Liches]], more powerful than normal due to their proximity to death and their power in life. The Liches are nearly as powerful as [[Revenants]], as close as Pisces could have made them. He commands the Liches to aid him when he fights his way into the [[Wistram Academy#Catacombs|catacombs]], pilfers [[Nekhret|Archmage Nekhret]]'s tomb, and sets Nekhret's curse of shaded apparitions upon the academy.<ref name="Pt. 7"/>
