This volume introduces us to the main character of Erin Solstice as she is teleported to another world from Earth and opens The Wandering Inn. In addition, the character Ryoka Griffin is introduced, as another female human who became a Runner in the city of Celum.

Erin doesn't meet the second main character Ryoka within the first volume - the runner's story arc deals with her aggressively distrustful nature as she meets many powerful persons, but cannot become friends with anyone. Significant events for her are her shattered leg, her avoiding talking to Magnolia and then her run into the High Passes, where she meets Teriarch who tasks her with a delivery that proves too difficult on the first try.
