Appearance edit edit source
He has blue-black hair in a buzz-cut.[1] He sometimes has additional limbs like a third arm, or a sixth finger,[2] and a beetle's leg, which gives him a lopsided gait. He has a hammer-like chin. He wears a hand-stitched puffy suit to goes up to his hands, and an open kilt for his mismatched legs.[3]
Personality edit edit source
"Bowom Womob. [Mad Doctor], practicing limb replacement, mind replacement, mind healing, general healing, and weird medicine."
Bowom listing his accreditations
A literal [Mad Doctor], Bowom is unabashedly cheerful on performing experimental procedures on people. He is always promoting the benefits of getting new limbs, and has a propensity for laughing maniacally.[3] His medical ethics are undeniably more questionable than those of Geneva Scala or most other [Healers]. Even so, he remains scrupulous about patient rights, insisting on informed consent before undertaking any surgery. He has a habit of diving into unnecessarily detailed, overly technical explanations behind perfectly normal things— such as the process of cheese-making - to make them sound as strange and stomach-turning as possible.
For all his theatrical madness, Bowom has admitted to trepidation at the thought of reaching Level 50, not knowing if he would embrace his class or abandon it. He has shown deep guilt over the fate of one of his former patients, Mieve, who now requires constant care after undergoing extreme augmentation.[4] He has a a gentler and more professional side when it comes to his patients' mental health.[1]
Background edit edit source
When Bowom was younger, he was fascinated with the idea of augmenting Fraerling bodies with the qualities of other animal species. In order to do so, he studied the brain and the different sections responsible for motor movement. His knowledge of anatomy comes from cadavers, donated or graverobbed.
When a carnivorous locust swarm descended on a group of Fraerlings, Bowom resorted to desperate measures to keep them alive. He performed emergency surgery on a Fraerling woman named Mieve, using everything in his travel bag—including part of a Creler’s brain. She was able to carve a path through the swarm, saving sixty-three Fraerlings. Despite Bowom giving her an estimate of three hours to live after the surgery, Mieve counter-leveled, surviving the ordeal. Stricken with guilt over what he had done to her, Bowom moved to Dretonamis to reflect on a path forward.[4]
Chronology edit edit source
Volume 10 edit edit source
Bowom is the main healer that takes care of Erin's health in the Fraerling village of Dretonamis after the war at sea against the Bloodtear Pirates. For the first few days in the villages Erin stays with him in his healing crystal geode which he calls Getwell Geode.[5]
When Erin had her sleepwalking fight with the Fraerling village houses and high-levels Bowom was the one who was wounded by her attacking him until Eurise showed up and she attacked the [Explorer]. Later, he also took Erin and Ulvama around the village when Erin was mobile again including the village kitchen house. He also reveals that he will probably hit Level 50 before he turns 50 and that reaching the level scares him because he might fall into the mad part of his class but also adding that mad does not necessarily mean evil in his view.[6]
When Ulvama is kidnapped by the Cottontail Raiders during the visit to Wyewesshi, Bowom is teleported from Dretonamis to sort the situation out. After Erin goes rogue to save Ulvama by herself, Bowom flies after her with Dragonfly wings he grows from his back. He only arrives after Erin had already rampaged through the Cottontail Raider base, but was fast enough to fix up the life-threatening injuries like Matha's cut throat. In the aftermath, Bowom talks to Erin about her going mad about Ulvama being gone and gives her "relationship" advice. In the village's tome that holds the records of the individuals who left Dretonamis, Bowom recorded his thoughts on Erin's and Ulvama's visit, having decided to leave with them.[2]

- (To Fantim) What? Maybe in ten levels. I’m telling you, architectural immune systems are fascinating. Here I am with a marvel of medicine in front of me and she doesn’t have the courtesy to be dead. So I have to practice ‘ethics’.
- He has hidden, trapped laboratories in Lemoste and other Fraerling cities.[4]
