The Bloodtear Pirates are one of the most feared and dangerous [Pirates] groups in Innworld. They are composed of multiple armadas that sail under one flag and slaughter their foes to the last.
Their flag is black, with a skull with a bleeding eye socket.[1]
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Bloodtear Pirates are considered a Vessal, ships with an individual or crew to merit them above the other ships of Innworld. They are considered crazy even by other [Pirates]. They are famous for slaughtering their opponents, and taking no prisoners. They seek combat, willing to challenge strong opponents like Gold-ranked adventurers for the sport of it, and paying back insults with blood.[2] Despite their famous reputation, they keep to a code of conduct, and are unwilling to kill innocents.[3] They also love display of courage[2] and admire those who did the impossible.[4] Such as in the case of Worroar the Waterbear of Celun, whom they invited the onto their ships to share a drink, after seeing her survive the sinking of her ship during a magical hurricane, even when she was carrying valuable cargo.
They are an egalitarian group whose members have many origins. The newer, untested members are called Newbloods. Otherwise, ranking within the Bloodtear Pirates is based solely on how a member is at killing, with no difference in treatment among the crew. They have a few rules, such as not killing each other without a good reason, not killing children, and not doing "foul things".[5]
The Bloodtear Pirates had three armadas of ships, composed of thirty-two ships at most. One of them was destroyed by the Iron Vanguard recently.[5] They use a variety of vessels, from sloops and smaller to large ships only smaller than Citadel-class. Their ships are known to be elusive, the reason for it being that several of their ships are also established trading vessels, and blend in with groups of merchant ships.[6]
The Bloodtear Pirates also own one of the Tide Skills, the Third Tide.[5]
Chronology[edit | edit source]
Volume 7[edit | edit source]
After news was leaked of the discovery of the Diamond Swords of Serept, the Bloodtear Pirates were among the sea-faring crews to try to steal the relics from Niers Astoragon's students. During the battle, they were convinced by Rasea Zecrew to teamup and fight Admiral Imor Seagrass and his fleet instead.[7]
During the transcontinental delivery of the Yellow Rivers cure to Baleros from Izril, the ship of Worroar the Waterbear of Celun was capsized during the magical typhoon. However, she continued to swim on towards to Baleros until she was picked up by the Bloodtear Pirates. Impressed by her feat, the [Pirates] toasted her and let her go, and chased off Savere's ships, which were trying to intercept the valuable cargo.[8]
Volume 8[edit | edit source]
During Ceria Springwalker's stay in Savere as a guest of Revine Zecrew, she had drinks several times with some of the Bloodtear Pirates, including Captains Aldrail and Jiupe. During one of their drinking session, the Bloodtear Pirates killed several Blackbeak Raiders, after one of them insulted Ceria.[2] This provoked a war between Bloodtear and Blackbeak, leading to a Drowning Night, where Bloodtear Pirates started killing Blackbeak Raiders en-masse, potentially threatening to conquer Savere.[9] During the Drowning Night, Ceria fought some of Bloodtear Pirates. She and Revine were able to drive them away from Savere by combining their magics to use [Rain of Frozen Tears].[10]
During the Seamwalker invasion of Kasignel, Cauwine disguised herself as a ghost and appeared in front of the Bloodtear Pirates. Seeing them as "people who had no hope," Cauwine gave them all Skills that allowed them to steal the destinies of the people they killed.[11][12]
Volume 9[edit | edit source]
Captain Jiupe was Bloodtear's representative in a meeting between Bloodtear, the Undersea Crews, Rasea Zecrew, and Irurx the Alchemist. They played cards while watching the broadcast of the Bloodfeast Raiders attacking the village of Salefenwool. During the meeting, Irurx offered each representative eight thousand healing potions to join him to attack the incoming Terandria colony ships on their way to the New Lands of Izril. Only the Bloodtear Pirates ended up accepting Irurx's offer.[13]
As promised, thirty-two of Bloodtear's ships sailed to surround the Terandrian Fleet. At Prince Iradoren's suggestion, the Terandrian war council decided to test the Bloodtear Pirates by sending three ships crewed with [Knights], one of the Thousand Lances, and the Skyguard of Erribathe. All three ships were massacred by the Bloodtear Pirates and Irurx.[6] As a result, the Terandrian Fleet sailed to the aegis of Wistram, but the Bloodtear Pirates continued attacking, killing nobles and [Knights], though sparing [Servants] and [Sailors].[14][15] The Terandrians were initially confused as to why the Bloodtear Pirates were unnaturally bloodthirsty when they were normally unwilling to fight on equal terms, along with the fact that ships would leave after attacking and killing entire crews. However, a [Message] from one of the fallen Taligrit ships revealed that the Bloodtear Pirates were stealing the fates of the nobility, such as their classes and Skills, their family's money, or even siphoning their luck and time. Wistram and several Terandrian kingdoms used long-range bombardment spells to attack the Bloodtear Pirates. However, Wistram was forced to stop after one of the Gnomes' safeguards against the Dead Gods, a halfling on the moon, prevented Eldavin from sending out a world-wide announcement revealing the existence of the gods, shattering much of Wistram's spatial enchantments in the process.
After being freed by the Lucifen from Roshal's ship, Erin Solstice decided to sail towards the battle between the Terandrians and Bloodfleet to rescue Rabbiteater.[16] With the help of the Lucifen (unwillingly), Ulvama, Admiral Dakelos, and the Horns of Hammerad, she attacked several Bloodtear ships, personally killing Captain Jiupe, while fending off several of Roshal's ships seeking to capture or kill the [Innkeeper]. Several of Erin's guests, including Ryoka Griffin, Nerry, Seve-Alrelious, Revi Cotton, Embraim, Rivel val Lischelle-Drakle, and Teriarch arrived to help the [Innkeeper]. While the Iron Vanguard initially stayed neutral, they along with Wistram began attacking the Bloodtear Pirates after emboldened by Rabbiteater calling them cowards. A Kraken also showed up attacking everyone, incited by Belavierr Donamia the Stitch Witch.
Answering Ulvama's signal for help, Greydath of Blades swam in and started fighting the Bloodtear. However, alerted to the arrival of the Goblin Lord, the Terandrians, Iron Vanguard, and the Bloodtear Pirates started attacking him. When Erin called to Greydath to help her save Rabbiteater, she unwittingly made herself and her ship a target for everyone. Lord Firrus Kallinad called for a bombardment to kill the Goblin Lord, ignoring everyone else on Erin's ship. Archmage Verdan Blackwood was able to shield everyone, but was killed in the process, causing the Iron Vanguard to turn on the Terandrian Fleet.[17]At one point, Iradoren tried to reveal Rabbiteater's identity and kill him, hoping to spin the tragedy of the debacle on the Goblin [Knight]. However, Erin killed the [Prince], then killed Admiral Rosech.
The sea battle would afterwards be called the Night of Bloodtear.[18] In the aftermath, the Bloodtear Pirates were effectively finished as a group, with the surviving members leaving with their new fates.[18]
Nursery Rhyme[edit | edit source]
A song that is half-chant, and half-Skill.[10]
Verse 1:[edit | edit source]
We sailed under flags of no quarter. We took no prisoners.
A storm at our backs. Blood in the water, blood in the sky.
Verse 2:[edit | edit source]
The bodies filled the decks. We fought until we died.
No mercy, no regrets, aye.
Verse 3?:[edit | edit source]
No surrender, no mercy, no regrets to be had.
Waters gone red, skies gone black.
Fearless all; we’ve ever been damned.
