tl;dr[edit | edit source]

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Montressa has a tough time dealing with the whims of her mentor, Valeterisa, but the two are productive as they travel across Izril, catching up on the forgotten duties that Valeterisa had left behind while she was locked in her mansion for over eight years. The two have an interesting relationship where Valeterisa pushes any uninteresting work onto Montressa including penning letters to high-level correspondents in her name and making sure the two eat and change clothes and in return, Valeterisa occasionally teaches Montressa spells. One of the meetings the two have to attend is in Salazsar with Ilvriss. Before they find the wall lord, Valeterisa is challenged by a mage named Fyres and she takes the opportunity to test the combat capability of creating an oxygen vacuum to nullify fire magic but finds it too slow. Once she finishes her test, Valeterisa easily dispatches the mage and gives his stave to Montressa. She did meet with Ilvriss afterward but is scared off by the secrecy and potential danger of his offer and leaves before he can be sure of her allegiances. Ilvriss wanted Valeterisa for his anti-Az’kerash team, but he required her to go into a secret backroom in order to be informed about it and Valeterisa would not do so. The two left shortly after with Ilvriss briefly asking Montressa about Erin, but neither of them had been back to the inn since Erin was seen walking again.

After leaving Salazsar, the two teleported away and made their way to Fissival, Valeterisa's childhood home. They were accosted at the gates as Valeterisa had fought against Fissival on Salazsar's behalf at the Meeting of the Tribes, but Valeterisa knew the laws of her home and was able to get in with Montressa. Inside, the city was a mixed bag. It had wonders like the Grand Plazas where citizens could collectively power a spell that would affect those standing in the plaza at the right time every day and the Grand Librarium where the entire city was connected by an underground library miles long containing countless books as well as free spellbooks for anyone to read. However, there were bad things too like the exorbitant tax rate on anyone that was a second-class citizen or lower and the fall from glory that was evident throughout a lot of the city. There used to be magic plazas active every hour but some had gone defunct over the years and the city used to fly, but now it merely hovered half an inch above the ground. This plus a heavy undercurrent of classism gave Montressa mixed feelings about the city. The two did go back to meet some friends from Valeterisa's past like Heorth the djinni librarian and Milaw and Ierythe some of the crafters from Heneith Street. Each of these people had special talents in their areas of expertise and taught Valeterisa a lot about magic in their own ways. Valeterisa gave them gifts and even secretly cast [Restoration] on some of the crafters though she refused to patent the spell in Fissival so as not to create more greedy healers like the Healer of Tenbault. After resting for the night, the two mages went to Valeterisa's school, one of the best mage schools in the world - The Draconae Scholarium.

Valeterisa did not have good memories of the Scholarium and the Scholarium did not like her. She was allowed entry, but they did everything in their rights to avoid interacting with her or letting her meet with the leaders of the institution leaving Valeterisa standing alone. At the same time, one Mage Lord Ascoden also returned to Fissival from his raid on Wistram. He had Earthers with him and he was one that appreciated Valeterisa. He wanted to shake her hand and warn her to leave because Fissival did not deserve her even if it needed her.
