Appearance[edit | edit source]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Gershal is a pragmatist. Gershal loves his city, and would offer people a wheel of cheese upon meeting them, as a way of promoting it.[1] He was inspired by Zel Shivertail after meeting him.

Background[edit | edit source]

Gershal had been a low-level officer from Vaunt, a small city north of Invrisil. He commanded a group of low-level [Archers] and [Swordsmen], though he had never fought in any wars.[2]

Chronology[edit | edit source]

Volume 4[edit | edit source]

Gershal, a [Lieutenant], and two hundred of his men was sent by Vaunt's [Mayor] to appease Magnolia Reinhart's levy to combat the Goblin Lord, as a sacrificial lamb in contrast to the four hundred levied to Tyrion Veltras, who was known to be a more battle-competent [Lord]. They are one of the last groups to arrive. He recognized Salvia, a [Captain] from Nonelmar. They met in her tent to chat, eat, and drink. Gershal brings out a wheel of cheese from his city. He was critical of the mix-match of Human troops that Magnolia had collected, though he was careful his critique wouldn't be overheard. He bad-mouthed Lady Bethal's Knights of the Petal until Salvia corrected him, pointing out their pink custom-made Dwarf armor was more than an eye-sore.

Shortly later, Magnolia's coalition of Human armies gathered to hear Magnolia speak. To their shock and anger, [Soldiers] realize that they are to be commanded by Zel Shivertail, a Drake [General]. Zel gave a speech, rousing the [Soldiers] to battle, for Izril. Gershal, and then Salvia, were the first to voice their support for Zel.[2]

Hold your positions! Hold, damn your cheese-rotted heads!
Gershal rallies his men against the Goblin army's discouraging war cries.[2]

Days later, the Goblin Lord arrives with his large host, with Gershal on the front lines. The Goblins cry out a morale-devastating, initially shifting the Humans' front until Gershal, embarrassed that he himself had taken a step back, ushered them to hold the line. He was afraid and nervous of the oncoming horde until Zel Shivertail activated his area-wide defensive skills. Gershal fought with vigor at his shield's new found strength, so much so that he found himself behind enemy lines. He was rescued by General Shivertail, who roared at him to get back in line.[3]

Later, when Zel personally engaged the Goblin Lord, Gershal would be in the middle of saving Salvia from her downed mount. He, along with the rest of the army, roared for Zel's victory. Before those watching could see more of their pitched battle, bone spikes began rising up out of the ground to surround the two leaders in a dome. Gershal would survive the battle to see Zel Shivertail dead, seemingly at the hands of the newly named Goblin Lord: Reiss.[4]
