The Wandering Inn Wiki:Wiki Migration

From The Wandering Inn Wiki
Community Discussion on the Wiki Migration

Reasons for Migrating away from Fandom[edit | edit source]

I'll just say it, and you may have noticed it. We're certainly all thinking it: No Ads. This wiki will not contain any ads or video pop ups obstructing the readers' view. Among other reasons, an in-depth discussion of the history, intrigue, and wave of other wikis and communities leaving the Fandom wiki farm can be found in this YouTube video here.

Another important part is that the wiki and its data are now easily movable to another host if needs be. We don't depend on a company that tries to keep us in its walled garden by artificially restricting export of data from the wiki anymore. Freedom is important.

The TWIki[edit | edit source]

The TWIki, our unofficial name for this new wiki (pun very much intended), is hosted entirely on the dime and time of Axel Terizaki, who also shelters the Wandering Inn Booru on their server. Torenity, that's me, is an editor from the Fandom wiki with some tech background that enables me to assist with the wiki-side of the technical setup (this includes CSS styling, Lua Modules, Templates, Wikitext markup).

Old Accounts and Contributions[edit | edit source]

All accounts from Fandom have been migrated over, with their associated edits and contributions linked to them. This was possible thanks to the coordination of the tech expertise of Axel Terizaki and of some people from the MediaWiki community

Creative Commons Licensing[edit | edit source]

Back on Fandom, our wiki content was available to the public under CC-BY-SA.
The new wiki's content is currently under CC-BY-NC-SA.

The important difference is the addition of "NC" in our choice of license. This means our content cannot be used for commercial purposes. Yes, that means Fandom could have, and can, use our old wiki content for their own commercial deeds.

Migration Timeline[edit | edit source]

The following has been copied and pasted from the Wandering Inn Discord. I'll be updating the one here and the one on Discord to keep our community in the loop on where we are in the migration process.

1) Basic and functional styling/UI, to get us started.[edit | edit source]

Main Page navigation buttons. Custom fonts used by the TWI website, to match what's official. Infoboxes Todo for Torenity.

Update: Marking this as done for the migration. I'll continue working on the look and feel of the wiki until we wrap things up.

2) Have Ocean23 migrate DONE[edit | edit source]

Ocean can start being part of discussions about styles/layout from the get-go, as is natural for a long-standing and founding admin.

3) Groundwork for Wiki Organisation DONE[edit | edit source]

I'll leave this to the new wiki staff I think it'd be a good idea to get our [Wiki Warriors] on the twiki setup. Meaning established pages to plan, pitch in ideas, standardize the wiki. Folks will be organised from the get go. For example, a page where we let the community comment on what's missing from the migration. If anyone from the Fandom wiki would like to start making these pages and the groundwork of organisation, ping me!!

4) Have a welcome message listed on the main page for former Fandom editors DONE[edit | edit source]

Direct them to migrate their account and how to get to the [Wiki Warrior] project discussions. Show them next steps If anyone from the Fandom wiki would like to help , ping me!! I can do styles and making things pretty, but someone to write out the message will save me work on my To-Do List!

5) Finalise the Migration Data DONE[edit | edit source]

A final pull of the data from Fandom, an Axel job. Edits and revisions can now be synced up with our Fandom wiki properly without collision.

6)Update our URL and domain DONE[edit | edit source]

Message the TWIWebMaster to request wiki.wanderinginn.com (and fanworks.wanderinginn.com for the Booru!) links. wiki.wanderinginn.com means we are the Official TWI wiki and acknowledged by Pirateaba, the IP creator. UPDATE on 12/19/2023 09:05 PST: TWIWebMaster has been contacted. Due to Pirateaba's hard work on Volume 9's epilogue, we likely won't receive a response until a few weeks to a month.

7)Make an official announcement to our editors, readers, and TWI Community DONE[edit | edit source]

Then, a ping to our Wiki Warriors on the Discord and an announcement on the Fandom wiki. Notify the different congregations of the TWI community out there. Reddit, Discord, see if we can ask Pirateaba to mention our wiki move in a blog post.

8)Then, get a wiki team together DONE[edit | edit source]

Update: Staff Page Axel plans to make an announcement that we are in need of volunteer admins and staff Administrators, people who've been leaders in the wiki community. A group we can show to Pirateaba that we mean to Officialise and Organise.

If anyone, anyone at all, thinks of something to add to this timeline, ping me!

Current Migration Projects[edit | edit source]

  • Editor Awards system and Awards art DONE (art is pending as a contest is ongoing among artists from the community)
  • Leveling System, based off of edits DONE see User Levels
  • Image cards linking to popular TWI characters and Innverse pages on the Main Page

And... general UI fixes and tune-ups as we move along.

Signing Off, Edit On[edit | edit source]

"We're here, now what?"
Editors, you can feel free to start editing and contributing actual content to this wiki. Got notes from the latest chapter? You can contribute!
Readers, feel free to browse and drop comments if you see something that you think needs to be changed, stylistically. As of right now, I'm currently working on fixing general formatting of our articles and main page. So you will be seeing a lot of changes as I work. Colors and such can be finalised by the community.

Once we wrap up the Migration, I will be asking Axel to remove my overall administrator permissions etc. to become only an interface administrator, which means I'll keep working on UI/UX fixes but have no further privileges. I believe the community should have a say in deciding who becomes a [Wiki Admin], and there are certainly folks from the old Fandom wiki who have contributed for far longer than I have that know the community's needs more in-depthly than I. I'll be sticking around as one of the interface administrators.I will be around to continue contributing edits, and offer CSS/styling know-how of the Wiki for anyone chosen to step into the role.

I hope I do you all justice.
