The Wandering Inn Wiki:Wiki Migration

From The Wandering Inn Wiki
Community Discussion on the Wiki Migration

Reasons for Migrating away from Fandom[edit | edit source]

I'll just say it, and you may have noticed it. We're certainly all thinking it: No Ads. This wiki will not contain any ads or video pop ups obstructing the readers' view. Among other reasons, an in-depth discussion of the history, intrigue, and wave of other wikis and communities leaving the Fandom wiki farm can be found in this YouTube video here.

Another important part is that the wiki and its data are now easily movable to another host if needs be. We don't depend on a company that tries to keep us in its walled garden by artificially restricting export of data from the wiki anymore. Freedom is important.

The TWIki[edit | edit source]

The TWIki, our unofficial name for this new wiki (pun very much intended), is hosted entirely on the dime and time of Axel Terizaki, who also shelters the Wandering Inn Booru on their server. Torenity, that's me, is an editor from the Fandom wiki with some tech background that enables me to assist with the wiki-side of the technical setup (this includes CSS styling, Lua Modules, Templates, Wikitext markup).

Old Accounts and Contributions[edit | edit source]

All accounts from Fandom have been migrated over, with their associated edits and contributions linked to them. This was possible thanks to the coordination of the tech expertise of Axel Terizaki and of some people from the MediaWiki community

To migrate and verify your old Fandom account: Special:MigrateUserAccount

Creative Commons Licensing[edit | edit source]

Back on Fandom, our wiki content was available to the public under CC-BY-SA.
The new wiki's content is currently under CC-BY-NC-SA.

The important difference is the addition of "NC" in our choice of license. This means our content cannot be used for commercial purposes. Yes, that means Fandom could have, and can, use our old wiki content for their own commercial deeds.

Migration Timeline[edit | edit source]

The following has been copied and pasted from the Wandering Inn Discord. I'll be updating the one here and the one on Discord to keep our community in the loop on where we are in the migration process.

1) Basic and functional styling/UI, to get us started.[edit | edit source]

Main Page navigation buttons. Custom fonts used by the TWI website, to match what's official. Infoboxes Todo for Torenity.

Update: Marking this as done for the migration. I'll continue working on the look and feel of the wiki until we wrap things up.

2) Have Ocean23 migrate DONE[edit | edit source]

Ocean can start being part of discussions about styles/layout from the get-go, as is natural for a long-standing and founding admin.

3) Groundwork for Wiki Organisation DONE[edit | edit source]

I'll leave this to the new wiki staff I think it'd be a good idea to get our [Wiki Warriors] on the twiki setup. Meaning established pages to plan, pitch in ideas, standardize the wiki. Folks will be organised from the get go. For example, a page where we let the community comment on what's missing from the migration. If anyone from the Fandom wiki would like to start making these pages and the groundwork of organisation, ping me!!

4) Have a welcome message listed on the main page for former Fandom editors DONE[edit | edit source]

Direct them to migrate their account and how to get to the [Wiki Warrior] project discussions. Show them next steps If anyone from the Fandom wiki would like to help , ping me!! I can do styles and making things pretty, but someone to write out the message will save me work on my To-Do List!

5) Finalise the Migration Data DONE[edit | edit source]

A final pull of the data from Fandom, an Axel job. Edits and revisions can now be synced up with our Fandom wiki properly without collision.

6)Update our URL and domain DONE[edit | edit source]

Message the TWIWebMaster to request wiki.wanderinginn.com (and fanworks.wanderinginn.com for the Booru!) links. wiki.wanderinginn.com means we are the Official TWI wiki and acknowledged by Pirateaba, the IP creator. UPDATE on 12/19/2023 09:05 PST: TWIWebMaster has been contacted. Due to Pirateaba's hard work on Volume 9's epilogue, we likely won't receive a response until a few weeks to a month.

7)Make an official announcement to our editors, readers, and TWI Community DONE[edit | edit source]

Then, a ping to our Wiki Warriors on the Discord and an announcement on the Fandom wiki. Notify the different congregations of the TWI community out there. Reddit, Discord, see if we can ask Pirateaba to mention our wiki move in a blog post.

8)Then, get a wiki team together DONE[edit | edit source]

Update: Staff Page Axel plans to make an announcement that we are in need of volunteer admins and staff Administrators, people who've been leaders in the wiki community. A group we can show to Pirateaba that we mean to Officialise and Organise.

If anyone, anyone at all, thinks of something to add to this timeline, ping me!

Current Migration Projects[edit | edit source]

  • Editor Awards system and Awards art DONE (art is pending as a contest is ongoing among artists from the community)
  • Leveling System, based off of edits DONE see User Levels
  • Image cards linking to popular TWI characters and Innverse pages on the Main Page

And... general UI fixes and tune-ups as we move along.

Signing Off, Edit On[edit | edit source]

"We're here, now what?"
Editors, you can feel free to start editing and contributing actual content to this wiki. Got notes from the latest chapter? You can contribute!
Readers, feel free to browse and drop comments if you see something that you think needs to be changed, stylistically. As of right now, I'm currently working on fixing general formatting of our articles and main page. So you will be seeing a lot of changes as I work. Colors and such can be finalised by the community.

Once we wrap up the Migration, I will be asking Axel to remove my overall administrator permissions etc. to become only an interface administrator, which means I'll keep working on UI/UX fixes but have no further privileges. I believe the community should have a say in deciding who becomes a [Wiki Admin], and there are certainly folks from the old Fandom wiki who have contributed for far longer than I have that know the community's needs more in-depthly than I. I'll be sticking around as one of the interface administrators.I will be around to continue contributing edits, and offer CSS/styling know-how of the Wiki for anyone chosen to step into the role.

I hope I do you all justice.

--Torenity, your fellow editor and novice [Stylist]

Please drop a comment if you'd like to get involved in any way. Ocean23, feel free to edit this and add on or revamp what you think this page should contain to fellow members of the Wandering Inn Wiki community, editors and readers alike.

Search Engine, Capitalisation
Torenity | Posted on Dec 29, 2023 at 1:24 am

The search function is caps specific on the second word right now, so searching for erin solstice doesn't give you any drop down options but erin Solstice does.

Fixed! Along with other search-related issues, thank you very much Mr. Axel Terizaki

Icons in the main menu
Axel Terizaki | Posted on Dec 25, 2023 at 3:30 pm

I think we need icons for "Help" and "Images" as they're the only two items from the main menu that have no icons.

If not, we should consider adding a trigger warning for those of us who grit their teeth when seeing alignment issues :p

Check out FontAwesome for icons, they're in SVG and good quality.

Torenity
Torenity | Posted on Dec 29, 2023 at 12:20 am

I reordered Images and Help to be at the bottom of the list, to alleviate alignment hair-pulling. The interface team and I will see into adding icons there.

When VE'ing, and attempting to open up the additional options on the top right, the tools window will be opened under the main content body.

About the URL and domain
Axel Terizaki | Posted on Dec 18, 2023 at 9:20 pm

Posting status updates here for those not on Discord.

Right now the current URL is twiki.shelter.moe as you all see in your browsers.

We've asked pirateaba (through their assistant and their webmaster) about having a subdomain fo the wanderinginn.com domain pointing here. Which means we could have a wiki.wanderinginn.com if they agree. This would help with our SEO, make the wiki more official, etc. This would also allow pirateaba to redirect the URL to wherever they want if we do something wrong with the wiki or if I were to be isekai'ed into Innworld myself.

If it works out, you'll have nothing to do : I'll put redirections in place so that twiki.shelter.moe translates automatically to wiki.wanderinginn.com

If it doesn't, we might still change the subdomain to something with the "wanderinginn" word in it like wanderinginn-wiki.shelter.moe for example, depending on what's best for search engine optimization, as we'll still have to compete with Fandom over this

Also, as the tech guy hosting the site on one of my servers, I'd like to thank you all for trusting me with this. I will try my best to fix any technical issue you may have with the wiki while it's on Shelter.

Spells List, Table Borders
Torenity | Posted on Dec 18, 2023 at 7:49 pm

Table borders on Spells list are visible, contrary to the old wiki

Should be looking more like how it did on the old wiki now.

Mobile Support?
Torenity | Posted on Dec 17, 2023 at 2:02 pm

Mobile will be supported, I'll be focusing on desktop styling first. Mobile's foundation is setup and navigable, so you can start browsing on your phone if you'd like.

Issue with using the menu button or any other button that creates a pop-up on Mobile. Difficult to dismiss the pop-up menu.

Will Achivement Badges come over?
Torenity | Posted on Dec 17, 2023 at 1:09 pm

I am going to try my very best to make it happen. We have multiple options and I have resources to poke to see how to make this possible. I too enjoyed seeing a new badge hit my User page on Fandom.

User edit counts did come over, so we can have high hopes at some sort of award system for rewarding edit counts.

Torenity
My user page looks...strange?
Torenity | Posted on Dec 17, 2023 at 1:08 pm

Noted! This is happening due to an extension not playing well with our skin. This extension is a candidate for us to integrate something similar to Achievement Badges from Fandom. I'll be fixing this later, as we start looking into the Awards system.

Infoboxes need to be fixed
Torenity | Posted on Dec 17, 2023 at 1:06 pm

I will be styling new Infoboxes to be used on all of our articles in due time.

Torenity
Torenity | Posted on Dec 18, 2023 at 7:59 pm

Old Infoboxes were dependent on an extension called PortableInfoboxes. Current plans are to create a new custom Template to remove this dependency.

Torenity
Torenity | Posted on Dec 20, 2023 at 7:05 am

Infoboxes fixed, needs more refinement. A task for later!

For Ocean23
Torenity | Posted on Dec 17, 2023 at 12:53 pm

Howdy Ocean! Well met, please do let me know about any thoughts about the organization and style of the wiki. You are free to make changes as you please, as you are a founding admin of the Wandering Inn Wiki community.

I am here to make the new wiki stylish. If you need any help or have suggestions, don't hesitate to let me know. Wikis should be made by the community, for the community, so what you say is important for the community to accept this wiki and start contributing here.

Please note, the main page at https://twiki.shelter.moe/The_Wandering_Inn_Wiki I will be heavily modifying to play nicely on mobile, and have images with links to popular pages such as Characters, Terminology, The Innworld, etc.

Questions, suggestions, or complaints are all very welcome and they'll all be addressed.

Ocean23
Ocean23 | Posted on Dec 17, 2023 at 9:31 pm

Nice to meet you Torenity, and I Thank You for all the hard work that you and AxelTerizaki are doing.

I have to admit that I have a bit of a hard time adapting to new changes and systems, but my love for TWI helps me to do so at the end. I know that your work is not complete yet so I am going to withhold any suggestions that I may have for now.

When you are done with the major work, Pleas inform me. From there I may ask if some changes can happen or not. I will keep any suggestions that I may have as small as possible. Do not worry I am Not going to complain for every littlie thing, nor dement major changes that you had worked hard for. But if any ever comes up I will ask them in moderation and see if you can help with them.

That is all for know, and Thank You.

Hey Ocean, just wanted to say thank you for all the work you've put into the wiki over the years!

You're not on the discord but your presence is felt, as long as I've been there people have always talked about you when the topic of wiki editing and editors comes up as the big power user whose done so much of the work.

Torenity
Torenity | Posted on Dec 17, 2023 at 10:01 pm

You can begin editing and contributing your TWI knowledge to this wiki without fear of losing your contributions. The database backend has progressed to a state where collision with Fandom edits can be avoided, thanks to Axel.

Torenity
Torenity | Posted on Dec 20, 2023 at 7:49 pm

Hey Ocean!

The large portion of the work has been done. Colors are susceptible to change, but structure is there. I tried to make it in-line with the official Wandering Inn's latest website overhaul. Today, I'll be looking into adding buttons for characters and popular categories onto our main page...but I just wanted to check in with you so that I'll have direction after my Main Page additions.

Please let me know any, ANY, comments or ideas you have and I can look into them, the goal is to make users of the wiki feel more comfortable. (For example, I used the Recent Changes button a lot on the old wiki, and getting it added to the top right again is something I want to do). Too much yellow and you think the links should be changed back to blue? Feedback of any kind is important (the bad and the good).

And most of all, thank you for being so accommodating in terms of the migration, I know change is jostling and the site may look very different to the old one. ~Torenity
