Long Night

From The Wandering Inn Wiki
(Redirected from Twilight of Magic)

(Also referred to as the Twilight of Magic, the Age of Silence[1] and the Faded Times[2])

The Long Night is the period of time where magic died due to the actions of the Mage of Magic's End until magic returned to the world.

Overview edit edit source

The Mage of Magic's End caused magic to die and magic only came back after 300 years.[3]

Magic was finally restored by Archmages who sacrificed themselves in the void to re-ignite magic. The first to do so was the Archmage of Sunlight, Ailet Sundrev, last [Lady] of House Sundrev of the dead Kingdom of Caonis.[4]

You see—when magic died, enchantments waned away. History was lost as fail-safes made of magic disintegrated. But more than that—every magical species reliant on ambient mana and unable to produce their own was suddenly unable to consume what it needed to survive. Countless flora and fauna vanished, leaving holes in the ecosystems that led to further collapse and starvation of the living.

The consequences of the death of magic were beyond catastrophic:

  • The population of the world was reduced by 60 percent during the centuries of the Long Night.[1]
  • Worldwide ecosystems were destroyed because magical flora and fauna went extinct.[1]
  • Seamwalkers climbed over the edge of the world very frequently because they did not have to fear magic.[5]
  • Reproduction among sentient species was very high and it is implied a lot of <Category: Sex> Skills were created.[1]
  • Monsters still existed during this time and were empowered by the lack of magic. Reference TBA
  • The average level at the time was including infants and children and 47 excluding all of them under 14.[1]

People edit edit source

  • Thatalocian was born during this period of time and his (first) life was shaped by the era and its threat of Seamwalkers the whole world had to battle. He lived to see the Return of Magic.

Trivia edit edit source

  • It is likely not all Magic was lost during this time, due to the existence of Djinni and Dragons, but also due to the continued existence of Archmages and other magical species.
  • Zeladona lived during the time of The Lightness Era, as the Empire of Drath dates her visit at -1176 D.O.M., aka 1176 years before the return of magic at the end of the Long Night.[8]
  • The current population of Innworld knows little about the event as much of the history of that time has been lost. However, a few (indirect sources) of the events that happened still exist including tales by the Gnolls, Teriarch and Thatalocian a contemporary
