Zail Gemscale is one of Salazsar's Wall Lords and Ilvriss Gemscale's father.

Zail is a very old Drake with greying scales that were once purple. A scar can be found on his chest and a slight indentation along his skull where the scales are almost gone.[1]

A traditionalist Wall Lord, Zail Gemscale is devoted to Salaszar and staunchly pro-Drake, the latter of which is a major source of contention between him and his wife and daughter, who favors peace with the Humans up north of Izril. He can be highly critical and contentious, and is described to be the kind of Drake to commit to a century-long feud rather than spend money to avert it at the initial stage.[2] He is honorable, seen by him willing to keep the peace with his former rival Wall Lord Itreus after being named Nemesis of My Hour at his wedding, despite Itreus' later divorce. However, Zail can be insidious, especially in business, when he once illegally mined into another family's mineshaft.[2] Despite his estrangement with his wife and daughter, and often being at odds with Ilvriss after his return of Liscor, Zail is shown to care for his family members, though he maintains a dislike for the black sheep of the Gemscale family, Nerul Gemscale.
Having been forced to retire after being wounded in battle, Zail is shown to resent his retirement and dislikes being treated as an invalid. Though Zail suffers from frequent memory problems caused by age and old war wounds, he is sharp and highly intelligent, being able to play Erin Solstice in several chess games she later described to be "good." Furthermore, he was able to pull off the Scintillation Counter, a highly complicated battlefield strategy that is akin to "arrow-scroll-sword at high speed and with a hundred permutations."[3]

He used to be the enemy of Wall Lord Itreus, until he was chosen to be his Nemesis of My Hour at his wedding thirty years ago, resolving their feud.[4]
