Chapter 1.01 D is the 8th chapter of Volume 3 and Book 3, Flowers of Esthelm.

tl;dr[edit | edit source]

During triage, Geneva rescues a Selphid named Okasha. Later after Geneva was attacked and paralyzed, Okasha rescues her by managing her body from the inside.

Geneva is told that she has to improvise and provide medical treatment on her own for the 600 non-officer soldiers of the 4th Battalion of the Raverian Fighters - without additional Healing Potions, until a new shipment arrives in a few days. The battles for the goldmine have already begun, however, and Geneva is given horrifyingly wounded cases on which she has to operate more like a butcher than a surgeon. One of her more curious cases is a badly injured Selphid whom she transplants into another body after cauterizing the wound - but at the end of the day, still appears to be dead.

She faces Thriss again after the first day of operating on the wounded, and demands help which he is unwilling to give, although he seems not unsympathetic to her pleas. Okasha, the seemingly dead Selphid of the previous day, recovers and becomes Geneva's assistant, together with other Soldiers who help her with performing first aid and triaging. The triage system also leads to a conflict when Lim and Clara don't understand Geneva's priorities and demand she treats her friends first, especially if they were also first in line.

As it turns out, the local Centaur tribe was systematically destroying the potion supplies of their adversaries, causing outrage amongst their enemies. Geneva comes into conflict with Thriss when she refuses to allow the torture a Centaur she treated and demands that he be let free. She moves her operating tent closer to the edge of her companies' camp, and eventually, many more than just from her own battalion flock to her. She gains the nickname of "The Last Light".

The Burning March and the Raverian Fighters emerge nearly victorious after days of fighting, but the Centaurs launch another attack on the camp. In the middle the raid, the Centaur she treated earlier notices Geneva and calls off the attack. He tries to approach Geneva, but gets killed by Thriss. Thriss then turns on Geneva, shattering her spine and nearly killing her before Okasha stabs him from the back. When she awakens "from the dead", she realizes that Okasha now resides within her, bridging her spine and helping her move.
