First Appearance

Chapter 8.41

Fithea sor Kerwenas of the Great Forest of Estiphole, was an ancient Dryad that was so old that her wooden body had fossilized. She secretly lived with other immortal beings in Ailendamus, and disguised herself to the mortals as an old Dwarf woman with the post of Conservator of Forests.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

In her true Dryad form she had bright eyes and looked old with a shrunken humanoid body of a barely 5 foot 6 tall. Her living wood skin had faded away, and turned to fossilized wood, making her look more like a stone tree-woman.[1] She spoke with a voice that was dry, cracked, but with a spark of life.[2]

In her false mortal disguise, she took the form of an old Dwarf woman[1] with white hair.[2]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Fithea's tree and forest died a long time ago, turning her into petrified wood.

Rhisveri met Fithea in a cavern buried deep in the roots of a dead tree.[3] She would teach him the magic of forests.[2] When he created a kingdom for immortals, she was the first immortal to join him and became Ailendamus' Conservator of Forests.[4]

Quotes[edit | edit source]

  • (To Sophridel & Gilaw) “Not in kingdom. Not in land. He does not say everything. Nor why the world shook last solstice. Nor. Nor. It came from Rhir. My roots. Even now, they shake. You understand? They are shaking here. Something has happened.
  • (To Sophridel) “Two. What do they seem, Sophridel? That one carries magic like mine.”
  • (To Sophridel & Gilaw) “The wind. She walks with the wind. Windfriend of old!
  • (To Rhisveri) “It is not any longer. She walks with the wind. She is a friend of the furthest travellers!”
  • To Ryoka:
    • “Ryoka Griffin. We must speak, if the winds say it so. By earth and sea, by land and tree, will you speak with me?”
    • “Thank you for speaking with me, Ryoka Griffin. They call you Wind Runner. I know you now, more than before. More than Courier. Friend of the furthest travellers. Friend of Fae.
    • “Rhisveri gave us shelter. He needs us to some extent. He does not rule me. I taught him the magic of forests. He is younger than I.”
  • (To Rhisveri) “I heard voices. Do you know what this means? She has offered you a meeting with your kind, Rhisveri. Worlds apart! She cannot be ignored. You must meet with her. If you will not, I will.”
  • (To Ryoka) “So this is the one who came here. You may have brought death to us after all, Ryoka Griffin.”
  • To Ryoka:
    • “I have heard her voice. Faintly at first—then louder. Death whispers in my ear. A story so old that even the oldest forests only whispered it when I was a sapling. Yet Death walks this world again. The Maiden, the Mother, the Matriarch. Kasigna.”
    • “I will not be alone any longer. You are the wind in the trees, Wind Runner. I was the land itself.”
    • “But that is me, and I will be alone, even if my kin are there. I was promised everyone. Death is kind.”
