The Last Tide: Book One

Chime is a half-Dullahan resident of Hesheit, an island near the Last Tide.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Chime is a young woman around sixteen years of age with dark tanned skin. Her hair is a warm black and cropped short, as if it had been sawed off rather than cut professionally. Her eyes are light green and she is thin without being emaciated, though still giving the impression that she should eat more.

Her right arm and shoulder is bulky, the armor made of crudely-carved stone with thick fingers. It looks half-finished, as smaller pieces of stone have been attached to larger cut fragments to form a huge stone arm, as if it belonged to a stone golem. It has a marking engraved on the inner upper arm. The armor on her left arm is assembled from bleached driftwood. It is the size of a regular arm and far better constructed.

Her clothes are tight-fitting and woven out of thick kelp, dark green and purple in color. She wears a gold bell as an earring, from which she got her name.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Chime is bright and energetic, but is also melancholic due to having no friends or family except for Taxus, and later Solca. She believes herself to be ugly due to Dullahans spurning her for her half-Human heritage.[1] Having never left her island home, she has an innocent world-view.

Background[edit | edit source]

Chime doesn't know who her parents are. The only memento of them she possesses is a fencer's gold bell, which she wears as an earring. She was raised by Taxus, and was treated as an outcast by Hesheit's Dullahan villagers.

Chronology[edit | edit source]

She befriended Solca Vis, who was hosted in her and Taxus' home. One day, Solca encountered her as she was diving for wood and offered her a ride back on her boat, during which she showed her some of her fishing techniques from Earth, and they briefly looked at the Last Tide. That night, Taxus asked Solca to take Chime with her when she left Hesheit. They encountered a Reefeye which Solca decided to catch later, and spotted a pirate ship.

The next day, Chime accompanied Solca, and they caught a ferocious Reefeye. They were then approached by Bloodtear Pirates, who demanded they cede the Reefeye's jewel. As Solca was about to comply, the pirates spotted Chime's golden bell and demanded that as well. Unwilling to give it up, they fled instead, and the pirates gave chase. To lose them, they risked the current of the Last Tide, letting loose the Reefeye to use its strength to escape. However, the Reefeye then pounced on Chime, dragging her under, and Solca dove in after it. Solca freed Chime and killed the Reefeye with a knife, and then Chime dragged her back to the surface. When the pirates caught up, they were impressed and decided to make an exception. They offered to tow the boat back to shore and invited them onto the ship. Soon after, a Seamwalker emerged from the Last Tide.[1]

Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]

Classes/Levels:[edit | edit source]

  • [Diver] Lv. 14[1]

Abilities:[edit | edit source]

Detachable Arms[edit | edit source]

Chime is able to freely detach and move her arms up to twenty feet away, and can recall them from further distances. She uses these to aid with her diving, her heavy stone arm acting as a ballast to sink down, and her light driftwood arm letting her resurface faster after detaching the former. Once on the surface, she recalls her stone arm back to her. Taxus helped make her stone arm, which is very strong but moves slowly when detached.[1]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Chime is embarrassed at the sight of bare skin, owing to Dullahan customs of keeping their bodies completely covered with armor.
  • She dislikes bits of shell gets in her food.
