Synopsis edit edit source

An extremely drunk Cara stumbles out of Seraphel’s mansion, and heads back to the Synphasia. When she arrives, Joeired is throwing a party for the performers. Yoitha proposes they go to a festival street. Intrigued by the festival activities, Rolare follows along promising to pay for the games. They start at a shooting gallery, but are unable to hit the targets. Rolare insists on staying while Yoitha and Cara search for food. By the time they return, he’s on his ninth try.  This becomes a trend as they go to each game, with Rolare going through multiple attempts trying to master them. They run into the caravan that Cara traveled with to Merenome. The Gnolls are happy to see Cara again, moreso when Rolare begins buying up all their wares. One of the Gnolls, Nisre, asks Rolare about the half-Elf villages. He describes life in the villages as consistent, with all the people undergoing the same daily routines for centuries on end. Yoitha claims that the Dwarves, another long-lived species, are conscious of time’s impermanence and “master things, or try, and live well.” Nisre asks about Dwarfhome and its metals, but Yoitha’s mood abruptly changes, claiming that it’s no longer good as it used to be with the old masters gone.

The three performers continue their exploration of the festival, having fun. Yoitha goes to a throwing game, wanting to win a plush of Duchess Greina. However, the tower of tin cans is impossible to topple, especially with the owner’s skills. Cara is slightly cynical of Greina, noting a member of royalty would have it easier, but Yoitha defends Greina, who rose to Gold-rank after failing as [Hunter]. Cara realizes Yoitha’s respect for Greina is not just from admiration. She wonders what would make a talented [Smith] stop smithing.

Rolare successfully knocks down the tower of cans, winning a plush of Duchess Greina. When he teases Yoitha with it, the drunken Dwarf pushes Rolare in a burst of emotion, sending him flying eight feet. Though the half-Elf is unhurt, Yoitha runs away in a fit of guilt and panic. Cara and Rolare chases after her, worried for the Dwarf and any passerby in her way. While running past a restaurant with a group of [Hunters], an overweight [Hunter] named Loshell stops her the Dwarf in her tracks just by reaching out one arm. Caught off-guard, Yoitha calms down and apologizes to Rolare.

On top of being anti-authoritorian and anti-law enforcement, Cara had developed a distaste towards [Hunters], as none had shown up in Afiele to stop the undead attack. However, she is appalled and unnerved at the group of Veteran Hunters as they undertake their indulgences. Several Hunters, including Loshell gobble down food at a fast and sickening intake, with Loshell going to the bathroom to throw up to make room for more. Hunter Visc’s indulgence of greed involves going to all the festival stalls and buying everything that catches his eye, spending gold like a madman. Hunter Pictirm, on her indulgence of sloth, claims she can’t go back to sleep after sleeping for sixteen hours. Gulping back eight shots of bourbon, she invites Cara to have a drink.

After knocking back several cups of bourbon along with sleeping pills, Pictirm goes to a Sleeping Parlor. Cara is horrified by what she sees, with Loshell explaining that as Veteran Hunters, they need the indulgences, which he refers to as "sins." The [Singer] sees several Helpful Servants serving the Hunters’ needs. Despite being different species and genders, all the Helpful Servants have identical smiles, the same look in their eyes, and even the same cadences in their voices. For a brief moment, Cara sees the Helpful Servants’ eyes glimmer. For a second, the Hunters stop what they are doing, with the crazy atmosphere surrounding the Hunters briefly dying down. Before Cara can process what she sees, Prince Seratoito arrives with his wife Huntress Agshiga the Commander of the Royal Deathhunt and a group of guards and Veteran Hunters. Cara instantly dislikes the Prince, as his luxurious appearance and condescending manner towards people is everything that she hates about royalty. As Seratoito joins the party, Rolare and Yoitha drag Cara away.

Ironically, their mutual repulsion of the Veteran Hunters is what brings the three performers closer together. After spending the night talking, they stumble back to the Synphasia at early dawn. While Yoitha is resigned towards her poor performances and thinks about quitting soon, Cara promises the Dwarf to help her find something. The [Singer] levels in her [Grave Singer] class, gaining [Uplifting Performance].
