First Appearance

Chapter 8.11 E

Velzimri (formerly named Velzi) is a [Sage] known as the Sage of a Hundred Thousand Secrets. He was the one who invented the Sage’s Grass.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Velzimri was a String-Person. He sported a long flowing beard that reached down his chest and tickled his stomach, colored by countless alchemical experiments. He wore a robe so long you could trip over it four times as he walked,[1] magical rings on each finger, and magic earrings, as well as a signature cape that provided him with any alchemical substance he needed.[2]

At the time of his death, his beard was white and his features had lines of age, though he was otherwise kept youthful thanks to draughts.[2]

Personality[edit | edit source]

In life, Velzimri was arrogant and spent money on whatever caught his fancy. He prioritized power and wealth over cultivating friendships.

Velzimri regretted the pettiness and lack of wisdom he displayed in life, which had led to his death. He initially thought his name should be lost and forgotten.[2]

Background[edit | edit source]

Velzi was born on Chandrar and grew up on the streets.[1] When he was nine years old, he experimented with magical molds and other elements that grew around his home city. By the age of fourteen, he turned lead into gold. He became an [Alchemist]'s apprentice and levelled from the practice, as it was popular at the time.

Following the terrible recession caused by the overabundance of alchemically-created gold, he would seek out many forms of knowledge. He studied the body, how potions interacted with it, and divined more secrets from that. He became a [Sage], and was capable of prolonging the body and bottling a Skill.

Possibly between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago, Velzimri outmatched his rivals when he created Sage's grass, combining herbology with magical powers worthy of an [Archmage]. His invention made him unimaginably rich, allowing him to purchase the secrets of immortality from Drath and Dragons.

He grew wealthier and more powerful over six hundred years. But because of his creation, he was forced into hiding from monsters and treasure seekers. He eventually died in his hidden home from being stabbed in the back several dozen times by an [Assassin] dispatched to end his monopoly on Sage's Grass.

Chronology[edit | edit source]

The Sage was one of the souls in the refuge of Chandrar.

The [Witches] had him tell his story to Erin in order to help her grow as an [Innkeeper]. She would ask him his name and befriend him afterwards.

Velzimri escorted Erin out of Chandrar when the Seamwalkers were summoned and the battle between the ghosts and the Gods began. He sacrificed himself to allow her, Cawe and Gerial to reach Terandria. He let himself get consumed by Norechl while detonating an elixir that launched the three straight to the continent.[1]
