Gresaria Wellfar, also known as the Duchess of Waves and the Duchess of Salt, is the [Harbormistress] of First Landing and a Lady of House Wellfar.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

In her youth, her hair was green, with brown mixed in. She had tanned skin and a muscular body.

At her elderly age, she looks as old as her actual age is, with white hair and a thinner body that had lost most of the muscle of her youth. Her skin was still tanned, but with lines. She’d also had the enamel in the gaps and places of her teeth replaced with gold.[1]

Dead[edit | edit source]

In the Land of the Dead, she soon reunites with Regein, who died to avenge her, and the two stay in First Landing's Sanctuary until the six Dead Gods assault it. Rather than fight a losing battle, the two leave to warn the others. They arrive at Yderigrisel’s Sanctuary and see the ghosts pressing their regrets on Erin. They help her out, and encourage her to live on.

They soon after pass on their news of First Landing's Sanctuary and warn them that three of the Dead Gods - Tamaroth, Kasigna and the Lost Thing - are coming. Kasigna forces the ghosts to kneel to her, rooting them on the spot. Erin's defiance of them convinces the Putrid One to sacrifice himself to break Kasigna’s control on the Ghosts. Freed, Gresaria and Regein join the ranks of Ghosts who stay behind to make a stand and sacrifice themselves to slow the Dead Gods so that Erin and the other Ghosts can flee.[2]

Maviola El[edit | edit source]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • She had once ridden eight days and nights in the saddle just to show up at a ball and burn Maviola’s dress.[1]
  • She had once out-drunk a Minotaur.[1]

Quotes[edit | edit source]

  • To Maviola:
    • Maviola! You cowardly little fire salamander! I’ll kill you!
    • “Enough of this. I’m tired. Get me a chair. In that…inn. And a drink! Maviola, run off and I’ll ride you down and put this spear through your back.”
    • “Are you joking with me, Maviola? It was worth every miserable mile! The look on your face made me three decades younger, I’ll swear. It reminded me of the time we attacked that little pissant, Adeis. Remember?”
    • “Enough about us. What have you done with yourself, Maviola El? I thought you’d go further than Liscor. That’s farther than either of us ever went, I’ll grant you. But—was that a fine young Drake I saw?”
    • “Good. Good. If you have a chance—take it. That’s what I say. Anything but the Temptress. I tried to throw her overboard when she came for me. I’ll wait to hear of you. Don’t you dare die quietly, Maviola. But that’s it for me.”
    • “I’m exhausted. I’m going to First Landing. I just wanted to see you one last time as you were. An old woman’s nostalgia. Not that you would know anything about that, you fire-addled brat.”
    • Back home! Maviola El—we’ll consider that my victory, shall we?”
  • (To herself) “It had a Companion’s Saddle. Lady Ieka’s. That damned horse thief must have chosen it for that. She’s stolen more horses over her life…mine included.”
  • (To herself) “All fire and no dignity. That’s Maviola. You need to give them a push along with the speech. Idiot.”
  • To all listeners:
    • “You ask why the bell rings? Are you blind, man? Are your ears filled with foam and seaweed? A damned pig stuck in a barrel at sea would know why they ring!”
    • The bell rings for attack! For war! For treachery and cowardice in our midst! It should have been rung the moment House Veltras’ sons were poisoned. It should have rung when the House of El called for aid! But it did not, and damn me for cowardice. Damn the Five Families for the same!
    • “I am Gresaria Wellfar! Harbormistress of First Landing! And I say there is a rot in our city! By the Five Families, it has been here too long! Cowards and traitors all! Enough. I say enough. Who will stand with me and root this infection out of our homes?”
    • “Am I supposed to fear your threats, shadow? I am of House Wellfar. One of the Five Families! Does the Harbormistress flinch before steel or poison?”
    • “Do you see anyone behind me, assassin? It seems the Five Families’ blood runs thin of late. Alone, then. And alone I would defy you to the last! I bow to no petty blades in the dark.”
  • To Despairing Ghosts:
    • I lived well! I have no regrets!
    • “I did everything I wanted. I tried everything I could. I did not always succeed—but I would never give my dreams to someone else to carry. For shame! Stand back, you sea-leeches!”
  • To Erin:
    • “Wishes are a dangerous thing. Hello, [Innkeeper]. I was told Maviola died well at the end. And again, I wasn’t there to see it. Just like her.”
    • “For what? I should be thanking you, and that reckless flaming horse thief! What a way to end it all. But not you, eh? May you have a thousand adventures more.”
