Yellats are a vegetable plant of Innworld, native to Chandrar but exported around the world.
Description[edit | edit source]
Yellats are crunchy[1][2] or stringy[3] vegetables, with the appearance of orange broccoli and the texture of a sweet potato. They have a mild aroma, but are spicy to the taste. They have wiry, deep, leafy green stalks which are inedible. They grow less soft in water than a potato. Yellats make for filling meals, but are considered a poor man's food on Chandrar, not fit for nobility.[3]
Unripe Yellats are blue.[4] When ripe, Yellats can be red[5] or orange.[1]
Overview[edit | edit source]
Yellats are a cheap food staple. They are hardy plants that can survive in poor soil, dry spells, and heat that would kill potatoes or other vegetables, and only need to be watered once a week.[3][6] As such, they are a staple crop in many Chandarian nations. However, they do not fare well in humid climates.[7]Yellats will shed layers of skin and refine with time. Su-yellats are a magical variety that grows from a normal Yellat. In a rare event, Yellats can move or run about when magic seeps into them.[8] Yellats become magical when they reach around sixty years of age, though most will be dug up by monsters at this stage.[9]
Some countries like Reim and Germina have hard times growing any other crops.[10] Aside from Chandrar, Yellats are also available in southeastern Baleros and central Izril.
