Chapter 3.18 T

Ylawes Byres is a member of the Byres family, a Gold-rank adventurer and the leader of the Silver Swords. Ysara and Yvlon are respectively his older and younger sister.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Ylawes is a tall man with blond hair. He wears plated silver armor, albeit without a helmet, and a belt with pouches. He is equipped with a shield and sword that gleam.[3]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Ylawes is a textbook [Knight] from a storybook who upholds the ideals of chivalry and honor. Described to be a hero without the class, he and his team travel around Izril slaying monsters and protecting the weak without expectation of reward. Ylawes has a strong sense of moral certainty. He is always driven to always do the right thing even if the odds are against him, seen when defending the city of Esthelm from Goblins and undead,[4] and hunting down Snatcher.[5] He posseses a black-and-white morality and is uncomfortable at the very thought of using underhanded-tactics. Ylawes is the fairest person in Innworld in the literal sense, as evaluated by the Grand Design.[6]

Ylawes often takes things at face value and lacks subtlety. This is seen when he and his team traveled to Liscor in search of his sister and bring her home, but was baffled when she refused his help. Ylawes can be oblivious to the point of frustration, seen in his ignorance of Yvlon's temper, or failing to even comprehend the conflict between Ysara and their parents over her sexuality. He's also rather uncomplicated, which is evident by the fact that his class remained in the base class of [Knight] even after Level 30.

Similar to Yvlon and possibly Ysara, he also has a repressed temper. He prefers to not publicly display his anger, and it's usually on someone else's behalf. However, it is still considered unusual for him to be even discontent.[7]

Background[edit | edit source]

The first monster he and Dawil fought was an Earth Elemental. They had made it stuck until other adventurers could come to slay it.[8]

Chronology[edit | edit source]

He went to the destroyed Esthelm to put the dead to rest.

Volume 10[edit | edit source]

After House Byres was destroyed Ylawes was in need of money and took his team, Vuliel Drae and the Poke Duo to guard the Yorrned merchant caravan into and in the New Lands[9] until they settled somewhere for 14 days, but had to end the contract prematurely after it became clear the mission was not prepared for surviving in the New Lands.[10]

Quotes[edit | edit source]

  • To Esthelm citizens:
    • “There are women and children—people who suffer and need help! Your friends and family cry out in this city, but what do you do? The instant your walls fall you turn on them. Shame.”
    • “I am Ylawes Byres, a [Knight]. I am a Gold-rank adventurer and I can save this city. But I cannot do it alone. If you still believe in Esthelm—follow my back.”
  • (To Yvlon) “Yvlon. At last I’ve found you.”
  • (To Mihaela) “Guildmistress, I am Ylawes of House Byres. Captain of the Silver Swords. I don’t believe this is just or fair to Miss Griffin. I understand you have reason for anger against Miss Griffin. But please—”
  • (For Erin) “Silver and steel be my guide. Everything dies. But not…not you. Not here. Not this way.”
  • To Tyrion:
    • “Lord Veltras. It is an honor. But I believe we have been in proximity recently. My sister and I were close enough to you, but we did not meet.”
    • “The Walls of Liscor, I believe. I was in a fine position to see the trebuchets firing upon us. I blocked one of the shots myself.”
    • “With a number of innocent civilians. Sir. I look forwards to tendering my greetings to Emperor Godart. Forgive me—I have just lost a friend I held in great esteem. So my words are slightly blunt.”
  • (To Melidore) “I will not hold back, sir. For I owe Miss Ryoka Griffin a debt of gratitude. And her errand is more important than your life.”
  • (To Snatcher) “Turn around! By House Byres and Izril, we will see you dead. Turn around by Liscor. By the Five Families! By—Yderigrisel, I swear I will cut you down.”
