Chapter 6.09

Grimalkin Duveig, also known as Grimalkin the Fist, is a Drake who lives in Pallass, and the famed master of his own personal magic school, Physical Magic. He holds the position of Magic-Captain in his city.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

He is a huge, muscle-bound Drake[1] with green scales[2] that wears tight-fitting clothing.[1]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Grimalkin is like a "drill-Sergeant on steroids" with an obsession with the physical body. He is extremely demanding and strict with his students, but is a genuinely caring teacher who tries to push them to their limits.. Despite his intimidating, muscle-bound appearance, Grimalkin is very much an intellectual, often taking notes when he witnesses an unusual magical phenomenon. Notably, he was able to figure out that Erin was from another world, albeit bribing Troy and Leon to spill the beans.

Background[edit | edit source]

Grimalkin is considered the most powerful [Mage] in Pallass, as such, other Walled Cities note that the loss of Grimalkin would be devastating for Pallass.

He grew up in Pallass.[3]

Grimalkin's combat power comes from practical expertise as much as levels and skills. Having fought in six wars, he looks down on [Mages] without combat experience. He notes Wistram graduates as typically lacking this practical expertise, although Grimalkin does admits Wistram is still a superior school of magic compared to the institution at Fissival where he learned.

Grimalkin holds an unknown formal rank in the military of Pallass and he confers with Chaldion and the [Generals] of Pallass regularly. It is implied that he has struck some form of deal with the government of Pallass to stay with the city in return for other benefits.

Grimalkin owns at least one mansion within the walls of Pallass which doubles as a location to train his students. He also regularly consults on the training of Pallass's elite military units. Grimalkin's graduated students qualify for a minimum rank of [Captain] in Pallass's military. He can also certify adventuring teams as Gold-rank, and recommends a student as Silver-rank and Gold-rank each every year.

Chronology[edit | edit source]

Volume 6[edit | edit source]

In one of Erin's first visits to Pallass Grimalkin is out running with his students when he meets her and recognizes her from the Goblin-Human Siege of Liscor and tells his students that Erin has "gonads" after (mistakenly) telling them she had "testicles".[1]

As part of some informal Liscor election help for Krisha and her party members, Erin brings him and Maughin to Liscor and introduces Relc and him as well as crowd of onlookers to weight training.[3]

Volume 7[edit | edit source]

When the Wyvern attacked Pallas, Grimalkin was part of the first defenders on the wall and he killed several Wyvern and was the first to engage the Wyvern Lord. Later he received help from General Duln and other specialists from Pallass first Army before it was finally chased away when Relc, the Flamewardens and decidedly Saliss and Bird joined in attacking it.[4]

Volume 8[edit | edit source]

Grimalkin and Xrn fight Belavierr, but he was not able to deal any lasting damage to her with most of his spells and strength. He then supported Xrn and distracted the Witch to give her an attack opening[5]

Volume 9[edit | edit source]

Volume 10[edit | edit source]

When Valeterisa went to Heiste, he tagged along on invitation of Nanette. On the trip there he visited Ulta mansion to talk to Pryde and stood in front of the door for two hours but, to his disappointment, Pryde did not want to see him. He also confirmed that the letters he had send had been received.[6]

While talking to the other magic users on Heiste, he revealed that when he was still studying in Fissival, he applied for an exchange program at Wistram and even though he presented a paper on the theory of physical magic he would later become famous for he was rejected on the grounds that Wistram was a place for students to come to learn not for those that thought they were ready to teach. Instead, mage Rievan a first year student at the time without nearly as much research and fighting experience got the slot by telling the selectors what they wanted to hear and by having connections to the libertarian faction.[6]
