Basal is one of the Centaurs serving in the Forgotten Wing Company. He is one of Perorn Fleethoof's top lieutenants, and as a Lizaur, he is one of the few male Centaurs who can talk to her casually without being seen as a threat to her potential suitors.[1]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

He is described as shorter than most Centaurs, but having a build strong enough to knock even other Centaurs off their feet. His torso is similar to that of a Lizardfolk or Drake, with scaled arms, a reptilian head, and mulberry red hide.[1] Additionally, he has a reptilian tail.[2]

He wears plate armor resembling that of a [Knight] (including barding), and carries a greatsword. His armor and horseshoes are enchanted.[1]

Personality[edit | edit source]

He appears jovial at times, but takes anything military quite seriously. He is reliable, and direct in his approach when talking to people.

Background[edit | edit source]

Originally from Baleros, Basal came to Izril due to Niers' [Castling the Pieces] Skill. He has likely faced discrimination in Centaur society, but made it to one of the top positions in Perorn's employ regardless.[1]

Chronology[edit | edit source]

Volume 9[edit | edit source]

Basal was introduced in Chapter 9.34, as part of the mercenary force harrassing Drake cities after the battle at the Meeting of the Tribes.[1]

The whole group makes it to The Wandering Inn on time for the final preparations for the winter solstice, during which Basal demonstrates more experience and foresight than Perorn's other officers. She internally remarks that he would be commanding his own unit already if he wasn't a Lizaur. [3]

During the solstice battle, Basal is part of the Centaur force supporting the soldiers of Vaunt.[4] As the battle progresses and things get more desperate, Perorn chooses to charge at Kasigna and, surprisingly, appoints Basal to lead in her stead.[5]

After the battle, Basal leads part of their forces to a funeral procession in Vaunt, honoring Gershal's death. After holding a speech, he supports a vomiting Salvia and offers her Gershal's twice-enchanted sword as part of his will, which she accepts a few days later.[2]

Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]

He is considered scary even among the fighting elite that went to Izril to support Niers' allies at the Great Plains. His role in battles is to charge straight into enemy lines and wreak havoc.[1]

Basal is the most capable of Perorn's captains, at least among the ones who went to Izril with her. He had the presence of mind to remember that the Drakes they were fighting still had stockpiles of healing potions, and risked a longer engagement to seize them.[1] He also was the only officer to accurately judge the power dynamic in the Forgotten Wing Company.[3]

As leader of an experienced Centaur fighting force, he is accustomed to high-speed, high-mobility fighting and travel.[1][6]

Classes/Skills[edit | edit source]

  • [Linebreaker Captain] Lv. ?

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Lizaurs and other 'Taurkin' (except Elfaurs) have a much lower social standing in Centaur society.

Quotes[edit | edit source]

To Perorn: "Drakes, eh, Commander?"

To Salvia: "Holding a puking comrade’s standard training in the Forgotten Wing company. [...] It doesn’t occur to other species, but Centaurs are half-horse. We have quite a lot of stomach. A puking Centaur goes for minutes if it’s bad."
