Eyes of Baleros (Relics)
More actions
The Eyes of Baleros, not to be confused with the the Great Company of the same name, are a pair of relics.
Appearance edit edit source
They look like beautiful round opals, half as large as a person. The magics inside whirl around; coloring a resemblance to an eye.[1]
History edit edit source
The Eyes of Baleros were relics owned by the Nagas, particularly those of the Jungle Tails. They have been the hearts of magical empires and fought over for eons. They were a notable part of the Nagatine Empire's power, and considered one of the legendary treasures of the world. Whenever they are lost, the Nagas are very invested in re-obtaining them, and other powers just as invested in keeping them out of their hands, and so wars have been fought over them.[2] The Jungle Tails and Nagatine Empires have been attempting to use them in a ritual to create a new ruler which has thus far always failed.[3] The struggle for them played a significant role in shaping the history of the Lizardfolk.
Arteis Ladel was part of a crusade to take away the Eyes form the Lizardfolk. The Eyes were given to the half-Elves immediatly afterwards, before the rise of the half-Elven empires.
The Lizardfolk used the Eyes to expulse the Lucifen from Baleros.[2]
When one of the Nagatine Empires threatened Wistram, Silvenia rose to defend it. During the conflict, she came into possession of one of the Eyes. She never fully understood its capabilities and considered casting it into the Last Tide. However, she did not have the chance — it was stolen from her by a dwarf [Thief].
The Eyes would be stolen by Thivian Stormless, the Lightning Thief, in what would be remembered as one of his most famous adventures.
One of the Eyes is being guarded by the Gazer Great Company, the Eyes of Baleros, so that the Nagas do not regain possession of them.[4] The other Eye was in the possession of the city of Manus, until it was stolen by the Antinium during the First Antinium War. It was stolen when Devrkr melted through a vault they guarded and took it, Xrn then used it to power the preservation enchantments on their food stores.
Bviora Stormless planed to steal Klbkch's swords and ransom them in exchange for the one of the Eyes, to win the inheritance of the Lightning Thief, her great-grandfather.[2] She and Vetn stole one sword, though the Antinium were initially unaware whether they had it. After the Grand Queen was informed, she considered trading it for the sword, potentially letting the Nagas reclaim it and plunging Baleros into chaos.[1]
The Eye was traded to the [Thieves] through a City Runner, and then were chased by a vengeful Klbkch and agents of the Walled Cities, with Tesy interfering with the pursuing parties. At Covieke, the pair managed to escape Izril with the Eye onboard a Drowned ship, thanks to Cauwine intercepting Klbkch. However, a final attack from Symphony seriously wounded them, costing Vetn an arm and killing Bviora.[5]
Abilities edit edit source
More than just relics, the Eyes of Baleros are considered veritable wonders. They are considered indestructible,[4] and hold enough magic to power fifteen Drowned ship barriers, can inflict mana-poisoning on those in a close proximity even through a bag of holding, and can fuel a Tier 8 spell and keep it powered indefinitely from the mana they generate.[5] They were used by the Lizardfolk to power their pyramid temples. What that exactly lets them do is unclear, but it allowed them to create Nagas at a great rate[6] as well as wage wars on other continents.[1]
The Eyes have an unknown true purpose that was never realized.[7] Teriarch is implied to be aware of this purpose.[8] This purpose may be the creation of a new God through a ritual, like what happened in a simulated timeline in the Palace of Fates. The God's emergence will empower every Lizardperson on Baleros and create millions of Naga.[3]
