Synopsis[edit | edit source]
Octavia Cotton, a Stitch Person and alchemist, engages in a fiery rivalry with Quelm, a fellow alchemist who has stolen and improved her match formula. In retaliation, she throws a burning brick through his shop window, escalating their trade war. As she struggles with losing business and seeking new innovations, she contemplates her connections to The Wandering Inn, a magical establishment linked to her shop via a teleportation door.
Upon visiting the inn, Octavia finds it in mourning. The once-lively establishment is dark and empty, with Erin Solstice, the innkeeper, locked in deep grief over the death of Goblins who fought to protect Liscor in a recent battle. Octavia encounters Lyonette and Mrsha, who confirm Erin’s despondency. At night, undead creatures, raised from the battlefield's fallen, gather outside the inn, but Erin’s magic keeps them at bay. The adventurers, including the Horns of Hammerad and the Halfseekers, tirelessly fight to prevent stronger undead from forming.
Meanwhile, Numbtongue, a surviving Redfang Hobgoblin, remains in the inn’s basement, trapped in grief and haunted by visions of fallen comrades, including Pyrite, who left him a fragment of his memories. After seven days, both he and Erin, each burdened by loss, emerge from their isolation. Erin, overwhelmed with sorrow and guilt, cries openly in Liscor’s streets, while Numbtongue, refusing to hide, walks through the city. His presence sparks controversy—some see him as a hero, others as a monster. When confronted by Liscor’s citizens and Watch, he questions why the Goblins who fought for the city were not allowed to live.
As arguments and riots break out over the Goblin question, Numbtongue, disillusioned, returns to the battlefield. He retrieves Pyrite’s gemstone and later buries the fallen Redfangs, gaining a Miner class from Pyrite’s memories. Though still grieving, he takes his first steps toward healing, carrying forward the wisdom and knowledge of the past.
