Chapter 9.66

Gailant is a Halfling warrior who serves as a failsafe by the Elves to prevent too much of the truth about the Dead Gods getting revealed.

Appearance edit edit source

Gailant is a "rosy-cheeked warrior."[1] Around four feet tall, his body glows and is semi-transparent. He has a faded scar on one cheek. He wears leather armor "festooned with pockets," and goes barefoot.[2]

Personality edit edit source

Gailant is a cheerful fellow who enjoys fighting, and is confident to the point of holding back in favor of showing off his physical capabilities. He takes his duties seriously, making sure to follow his mandate to the letter. He waits in anticipation for the time when he meets his match.

Background edit edit source

Gailant used to be an ancient hero, called the Slingblade of Garkou's Crossing, after a signpost he liked to nap under. He is famous for felling a Dragon-King with an apple. He was present when the Elves presented the Goblins and their vote to the Gods.[3]

The Halfling has been around for tens of thousands of years, since the end of the God War, having volunteered for the task of guarding the knowledge of the Elves. He materializes to prevent those who speak of the dead gods and the events of the war. He doesn't exist unless he is needed, and so from his perspective, very little time has passed though he was aware of the changing ages.

Teriarch has encountered him twice. The first time, he was a hatchling and a group of Dragonlords tried to pass on their secrets to the next generation. The Halfling came down and killed the Dragonlord of Storms of the time. The second time was when Teriarch tried to pass on his knowledge to his daughter. Both times, Teriarch's memories of the Halfling were wiped.

Occasionally he's had visitors on the moon, who were the only people to learn his name, which included Lizardfolk, "arrogant [Mages]", and a Void Dragon.[2]

Chronology edit edit source

Volume 9 edit edit source

After Eldavin tried to broadcast the names of Kasigna and Cauwine on the Wistram News Network but was blocked by Roshal, the Halfling came down, punching through Wistram's magical defenses, and tried to kill him. Eldavin escaped and the Halfling vanished, returning to the moon.[1]

Volume 10 edit edit source

Teriarch was egged into revealing the truth about the God War instead of drip-feeding trivia as he usually does. This summoned the Halfling, who attacked those present. He beat down Teriarch, Taletevirion, Rafaema, Cire, Lulv, Mivifa, Ressa and Reynold, and ignored Magnolia Reinhart's attempts at diplomacy or to weaponize him against Bethal. Teriarch stopped him by threatening to destroy the green moon with his combined hoard of relics if he didn't leave.[2]

The force of his landing created tremors which caved in some of the tunnels in the Troll Kingdom and made the Mortemdefieir Titan rush to reform in the face of this unknown threat, and placing Rags in a perilous situation in her planned ambush to destroy two of the Titan's limbs.[4]

The Halfling was summoned again soon after by Six different Teriarchs from the Palace of Fates, to confront the Goblin King. Gailant was so shocked that he spoke for the first time since he began his duty. As they talked and the Goblin King tried to convince him to ally with him as another enemy of the Gods and friend to the Elves from the earliest era of the world, Gailant became aware of the Goblin King's all-consuming hatred for the world and his total refusal to let it go for even just one life. And so they started to battle.[3]

Powers and Abilities edit edit source

Gailant is an incredibly skilled combatant. Despite not having any levels, he single-handedly overwhelmed three Dragons, a Unicorn, and two Named Adventurers in combat.

He is able to see Skills be activated.[5] He can also speak words that turn the target to dust,[2] and initiate a Last Letter word game that builds up in some way until it explodes the head of the person whose turn it was.[5]

Equipment edit edit source

  • Shortsword: A glowing sword meant to kill gods, able to parry spells and slice through Teriarch's brass scales.
  • Sling Staff: Launches projectiles with tremendous power, stronger than a Giant's blow and able to hurt even Teriarch, which can also change direction in midair and be recalled back to the sling. They are also antimagic, among other magical projectiles. The sling is also able to scoop up and launch elemental attacks. (Ammo destroyed)
  • Leather Armor: Of unknown make and full of pockets. It's linked to another dimension, so anything piercing it will not hit the wearer underneath.
  • Shield: Able to partially protect from Teriarch's dragonbreath, and deflect Magnolia's Balefire Ring beam.
  • Smoking Pipe: Creates a giant dragon of smoke. Anything enveloped by the smoke is evaporated.
  • Bird: A bird that grows with the distance it travels. It can quickly become bigger than a dragon, and will leave a smoking red crater where it hits.
  • "Vortex": A thrown item similar to a Vortex Arrow.
  • Healing Pellets: Heals wounds when consumed.
  • Gloves: Increase strength enough to throw a Giant.

Trivia edit edit source

  • He knows twenty-two languages, including French.[3]
