Chapter 8.24

Seraphel du Marquin, also known as Seraphel the Cursed, is the 4th Princess of the Eternal Throne of Calanfer.

Appearance edit edit source

She has red hair,[2] but of a lighter shade.[3]

Personality edit edit source

Sharp-tongued and sardonic, Seraphel has a habit of verbally assaulting people if they annoy her. While seemingly the perfect example of a [Princess], she often feels confined by her duties.[4]

Having survived several sieges, she is remarkably nonchalant about being in another one.[4]

Background edit edit source

Seraphel gained the reputation of being cursed after being widowed three times: first to an old man who died in his sleep, and then to a boy who ran off with a [Shepherd]'s daughter (who later died).[2] More recently, her third husband died in an incident in Noelictus involving Ailendamus. There, she met Cara O'Sullivan before the [Pop Star]'s rise to fame, and endured two sieges.[4]

Chronology edit edit source

Gravesong Book One edit edit source

Seraphel travelled through Afiele in a carriage, on her way to her latest fiance, Earl Fallien of Ovela, in Noelictus. She was irate about the entire situation, and snapped at her [Handmaidens]. But the escort was ambushed by a cabal of [Necromancers], who mistook them for the entourage of Lord Lantal Afiele and his family. As the Thronebearers were outmatched, she confronted the lead necromancer, explaining who she was and trying to leave with the knights through audacity while the fighting had ceased. However, the necromancer decided to kill them all anyways, even when she tried to bribe him with up to sixty thousand gold pieces. The attack resumed when Lantal and his men arrived, cutting down the undead and hounding the necromancers. After the battle, Lantal offered the hospitality of his home until a larger escort could be arranged.

She grew bored during her stay in Adreissel, waiting for the escort from Menorome. It would take three days to arrive due to a lack of movement Skills, as the armies were busy putting down Goblin raids and her fiance was engaged in a border conflict with Ailendamus. She was outraged at these slow responses and her father doing nothing to let Noelictus save face, but kept a polite demeanor in front of her hosts, who she found charming.

At the banquet, she met Duchess Grishen and listened to the somber songs from the invited village songmasters, which worsened her mood. She saw Cara, and returned the singer's glare. But she was moved by the song from Violetta and Cara, which woke her from her depressive state. Seraphel stood up and applauded them. However, the banquet was interrupted when the village of Qet was attacked. She ordered the Thronebearers to aid lord Lantal in fighting them.

The town was soon under siege by the undead, and her fiance's response was delayed. Seraphel helped during the siege by bottling healing potions and doing laundry. She and Cara started chatting, talking about the singer's dislike of royalty, and prodding about her origins. She promised to investigate Cara's past at her leisure if they survived. She later came across her again as she was singing for Culin and Sasi. Cara sang another pop song for them, and talked to them about her home, then she and Cara began singing together. After Lantal and Risel fetched their sleeping children, Seraphel retired to her room to sing alone, finding it enjoyable for once.

Seraphel was evacuated in her carriage when the Zombie Giant breached the town walls. Risel, Culin and Sasi rode with her. Ghouls attacked the carriageto get the Afiele family. The princess tried to pull Risel back in but failed, and the carriage continued without them despite her protests that they stop and rescue them.

She and the Thronebearers stood with the people of Afiele when they marched against the undead army sieging Castle Ladel.

After the battle, she attended the funeral for Lantal and Risel. She spoke with Cara once more during the wake, who she anticipated would try to sneak away. Cara told her her real name before departing: Sidheag.[5]
