Nanette Weishart is a young Human [Witch] and Califor's daughter and apprentice. She currently lives in The Wandering Inn.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

She is a young girl with brown eyes[1] and chestnut brown hair and wears a simply navy blue and dark, child’s hat[2] that has a wrinkle near the tip,[3] and a little star made of thin wood and painted silver, on top.[2]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Nanette possessed an optimistic and kind-hearted outlook, seen during the wildfire, when she wanted Califor to stay and help the people, in spite of being in danger herself.[3][4] After Califor's death, Nanette was utterly grief-stricken and became a shell of her cheerful self. She spent months in an emotionally-numb state, mainly from her being weighed down by the sad emotions gathered from her [Witch] class.[5] However, she became able to move past her trauma after having her [Witch] class removed by Laken Godart, returning to her cheerful and innocent self.

Around Califor, Nanette was shown to be meek and shy. She looked up to her mother, and feared of disappointing her.[6] She was eager to prove she could become a good [Witch], evident by her having received her class at the age of six. However, at The Wandering Inn, she is confident and self-assured, seen when she called out Gireulashia for her bullying.[7] Nanette is sociable and extroverted, becoming fast friends with Mrsha and Bird. She is also eager to assist, such as assisting Calescent in the kitchen[7], or helping Yelroan acclimatize to his new role as The Wandering Inn's accountant.[8] She is mischievous, such as when she engaged in a prank war with Mrsha.

Background[edit | edit source]

Nanette was raised by Califor in a cottage by the High Passes, and was watched over by a goat named Belfaus when her mother was away. One time, she wandered too far from the warded cottage, and Gargoyles snatched her and Balfaus, eating the goat. She was kept in a cave until Califor came to rescue her. After that incident, Califor taught her magic to defend herself.[9]

Nanette received the [Witch] class when she was 6 years old.[6] She traveled with Califor when she took her as an apprentice.

Chronology[edit | edit source]

Volume 6[edit | edit source]

On their way to Riverfarm, Nanette and Califor were accosted by [Bandits], though the [Witches] escaped by distracting with illusions. They meet up with Witch Alevica, and arrive together, where they gather with the rest of the coven, comprised of Mavika, Hedag, Eloise du Havin, and Belavierr Donamia. While Wiskeria protested the arrival of the other [Witches], they revealed the news of the deaths of her coven at the hands of the Circle of Thorns, and announced their intent to ask Emperor Laken for the establishment of a [Witches'] sanctuary at Riverfarm.[10]

For most of the [Witches'] stay at Riverfarm, Nanette stayed close to Califor, becoming close with Ryoka Griffin and Wiskeria. When a Drake [Infiltrator] from Manus set fire to the surrounding area of Riverfarm, Nanette and Wiskeria convinced the rest of the coven to try to conduct a ritual to put out the fire. When the ritual failed, Nanette was caught by the backlash and thrown into the river, though was quickly pulled out by Califor. While the two [Witches] were leaving, Belavierr came to them. During their conversation, unbeknowst to the younger [Witch], Belavierr stole some of her hair and threatened to kill Nanette if Califor didn't put out the wildfire. With the two [Witches] switching appearances, Belavierr stayed with Nanette, as Califor, looking like Belavierr, stopped the fire at the cost of her own life. While everyone was mourning 'Belavierr,' the Stitch-Witch revealed the swap, which broke Nanette emotionally.[4] Though unresponsive to the world, she was present during the coven's meeting with Laken, and was the one to sway the [Emperor's] decision to form the pact with the [Witches]. That night, the coven gathered and successfully used a ritual to summon Califor's ghost. Nanette begged her mother to return, though the [Witch] refused, revealing that something walked in the land of the dead, devouring ghosts. Califor bound Wiskeria with a magical pact to keep her daughter safe and disappeared, leaving her hat behind.[5]

Volume 7[edit | edit source]

Still mourning her mother, Nanette continued to be in an unresponsive state, refusing to engage with others. She picked herbs in the meadows near the border between Riverfarm and the Goblinlands, sometimes sitting and doing nothing for hours. While the other village children liked throwing stones at the Goblins, they decided one day to use Nanette as a target. Pebblesnatch attacked the children to defend the [Witch]. Although the incident almost ignited a battle between Riverfarm and the Goblins, Nanette told the other [Witches] what happened, thus preventing the conflict, with Mavika turning her rage and flock against the villagers.[11]

She was present during the [Witches'] divination to determine the poison used by on Hethon and Sammial Veltras.[12] During the Summer Solstice party, she was in a small group playing chess, though she still wore a blank expression and held slightly back.[13]

Volume 8[edit | edit source]

Nanette was among a group of young [Lords] and [Ladies], villagers, and [Witches] who tried to emulate Ryoka's flying methods.[14]

Volume 9[edit | edit source]

Nanette gives up her [Witch] class and joins Erin to live at the Wandering Inn

Quotes[edit | edit source]

  • (To Califor) “I know, Miss Califor. I’ll do my best not to embarrass you.”
  • (To Alevica) “Oh! I—I greet you, Witch Alevica! I tip my hat—”
  • (To Ryoka) “It’s fine just to do what you want. So long as it’s something you won’t regret. You only live once. And I won’t die with any more regrets on my hat. Uh—that’s what Miss Califor says. Not me.”
  • (Quoted Califor’s favorite sayings) “Children should see wonders and magic. Terrible things. They should meet legends so they know how it was done and that it was done.
  • (To Lyonette) “That’s just Miss Erin for you. Every door in her inn leads to something ridiculously happy and funny or cripplingly sad.”
  • (To Mrsha) “You might hear far better than me, but I listen, Mrsha. Come on, this isn’t hard.”
