Chapter 10.00 L is the 1st chapter of Volume 10. The L stands for Lyonette du Marquin.

tl;dr[edit | edit source]

Lyonette is still recuperating from the Winter Solstice. Nanette and Hethon discover that Lyonette kept Ryoka's Ironwood wand from them. Rose comes back to the inn. Erin's Mystery Box appears in the inn.

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

The chapter begins the day after the boy from Vaunt came to the inn, with Mrsha and Nanette shoveling their way through the snow towards the graves of Moore, Halrac, Kevin, Silvermop, Alcaz, Seve, Ser Herove and Thunderfur. They are accompanied by Dame Ushar, who tries to blackmail them into bettering their manners by threatening to tell Lyonette about their escapades. While they are there, they notice the patches of ashen sky where Kasigna’s influence has permanently warped the region.

After that, they go shopping in Liscor. While the Liscorians aren’t outright hostile to them, they treat the children with wariness and apprehension, due to their affiliation with the Wandering Inn. Much has changed - the housing trends in Liscor are shifting due to the influx of people migrating to the newly-built districts, and while Krshia’s and Lism’s stalls still exist, they are both focused on their work as Councilmembers and have left the shopwork to others.

After they get back, Dame Ushar is silently scrutinizing Lyonette, who is now seeing Nanette as her daughter as well. She has put on more muscle and is currently training her swordsmanship with Dalimont, though she interrupts it to help Ishkr deal with one of the few guests who still earn the inn money: Valeterisa. But before she can do anything, Yelroan jumps in to deal with Valeterisa’s errands. The other two high-priority guests are Hethon and Sammial, who have been left at the inn with Jericha and Ullim because Tyrion, true to his new class, is chasing after Ryoka in Baleros. The last guest is Chaldion, who has lost his will to live, but cannot die because of Kasigna’s curse.

Taletevirion is also contributing to the inn’s coffers, by stealing their beverages and allowing them to charge Teriarch or Magnolia for them. However, the lack of guests is giving Lyonette a hard time procuring the funds for the new inn planned by Drevish, so she reaches out to Niers. He tells her that Erin is recovering, and that politics make it impossible for him to help the inn directly. He does, however, advise her to set up her own household of trustworthy people, and to reach out to her parents for the funding.

Meanwhile, Hethon is searching for the Living Wand, as requested by the mysterious people that sheltered the kids during the winter solstice. With the help of Nanette, he finds it in Lyonette’s room, who has hidden it from the children. A portal opens, but before they can step through, Lyonette storms in and takes the wand. She sends the children away and threatens the strange people into giving up on making the kids go on adventures, at least for now.

After this ordeal, Lyonette reaches out to her mother, Queen Ielane. After negotiations, she receives help with the household staff planning, and will get the funding for the new inn if she can meaningfully contribute to Calanfer’s efforts in the new lands.

Lastly, Lyonette and some guests discover a small wooden box that has been appearing in multiple places around the inn during the last month. They don’t notice anything strange about it, and Lyonette tells them to leave it alone for now, but Calescent can’t help himself and secretly puts a piece of garlic inside the box. [The Transient, Ephemeral, Fleeting Vault of the Mortal World. The Evanescent Safe of Passing Moments, the Faded Chest of Then and Them. The Box of Incontinuity] promptly duplicates the piece of garlic multiple times, and Calescent is unable to put it back into the box again. Lyonette discovers him and Nanette (who was sneaking up on him), and the chapter ends before they can find out more.

  • (Mrsha to Dame Ushar (written)) It is true you have been a stalwart, nay, pestilential erstwhile companion, but mutual acquaintanceship and grudging respect for your position does not, I believe, friends make.
  • (Mrsha to Nanette (written)) What happened to the days when you could be in Liscor in a second? How much are we paying for these [Guards] to stand here? Where’s my tax money going?
  • (Queen Ielane to Lyonette) “Regardless, few [Princes] look for experience when youthful innocence will do. Innocence is to be enjoyed; you are now a sobering reminder of eternal second-placement. To an Antinium, no less.”

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Pirateaba put in a joke near the end of the chapter, right after Calescent opens the box with the garlic inside. They pretended that this was the end of the chapter, with a fake author's note, thus almost blue-balling the readers who wanted to find out more about the box.
  • In this chapter a book Niers wrote is revealed: Intrigue, Integrity, and Ingenuity in Terandrian Staffing, an 8-year Guide and Reflections.
