Synopsis edit edit source

Nailren hunts throughout the New Lands of Izril believing he rediscovered something that was lost to the Gnolls, isolation and a place big enough to run about without encountering someone else. While cooking lunch Nailren can see that some of his group are feeling homesick which brings to his mind the gnollish stereotype of having the itch to live a simple life living off the land and to leave everything behind like the antagonistic political climate between Drakes and Gnolls. Nailren has given up his job of being the Gnoll equivalent to the Drake [Infiltrators] and similar classes to become one of the first to chase the dream of exploring the New Lands. Having Bekr retrieve some milk and Kelthe poison-testing the soup saying it's good means that the clam chowder is ready to eat, after eating their fill the group cleans up and covers the Corusdeer meat in salt is when they hear a pack of landsharks nearby. They set up a diversion by sticking a piece of meat on top of a long vertical pole for the landsharks to hunger over, the group speak of the dangers and potential gains of fighting such a pack as they travel to the Clam Plains.

Standing on a huge, rocky hill Nailren draws the landscape in his notes and wonders if the terrains of the New Lands were designed by Kishkeria as he sees another ruin in the distance, he gets informed by Kelthe that they've made contact with some Drake explorers who've ran out of supplies. Learning of their situation and how their were given some supplies and the directions towards Goisedall, later they meet up with Cuska and learn about the landscape and interesting spots in the surrounding area. Cuska tells them of the death of four humans in their small camp with the conclusion being that they were murdered, thinking of harvesting their tents later they set a few more permanent traps as they go to sleep.

Arriving at the dead campsite, Nailren collects the tents while analyzing the crime scene assuming that it was most likely a human who did the killings, while hanging up the tents after cleaning them Nailren sees a grey human on his periphery. Calling his tribe to guard him, Nailren collects the sheets and a fishing line when he observes a young man looking at him from below the waters, he realizes that the disappearing humans are the dead travellers. Later while having dinner Nailren discuss to the others that he may be victim to warsights, the next few days for Nailren has taken all the fun from the New Lands as he continues to see the four dead travellers around him. Slowly losing it, Nailren punches near Nanette's scry image from the [World's Eye Theatre] think her as one of the ghosts, squaring that away Nanette brings an offer to them to purchase any valuable information from them. Nailren tells her of the many things they have seen, one being a basin of growing soil theorizing that there was something accumulating in the area preventing the salt in the seas from seeping in before the land was raised. After gaining a hefty sum of gold for their knowledge Nailren requests details about the Silver Swords whereabouts to see if they require his help, but Nanette inquires about the grey people in his tent making Nailren realize that they aren't a part of his warsights.

Ylawes awakens in a decaying state of starvation and weakened physicality after days of travel with dwindling food supplies as the group makes their way towards supposed help, he speaks with the Poke Duo about their disastrous state of affairs as they trek through a rain shower of the New Lands. The next day they arrive at a new area with trees that have holes in them, starting a grassfire Ylawes and a few others scout the are for anything edible, speaking with Pekona he learns she is starting to doubt herself since her blade is beginning to rust due to the lack of anymore oil. Ylawes makes an effort to connect with her worries displaying the lacking state of him and his gear. Suddenly the scouting group gets attacked by large raccoons, while eating raccoon meat and worms the Silver Swords, the Poke Duo, and Vuliel Drae present any skills, boxed or not, that would aid in their current predicament. Anith speaks a bit about the Beastkin Tribes and why he left and Pekona in turn talks about the position of Mediators in Drathian society, seeing the interested, non-disparaging looks from her audience she goes into how cultivation works in a general sense. They all try to do the meditations as Pekona showed them but their hunger and poor state makes it difficult for them to clear their minds so they decide to go to sleep.

The next day Rasktooth reveals that he has gained a [Cultivator] class to the astonishment of Pekona, Larr then informs Ylawes that he sees something nearby. They come to see golems and their handlers but as Ylawes and Dawil try to speak with them they retreat and gets attacked for getting too close. Noticing that the Terlands are on edge, they use a white flag to signify that they are non-hostile, approaching the camp Ylawes feels that something is off as there's nobody on the walls and whomever is speaking with them haven't presented themselves as a noble of Izril would. Being allowed to enter the camp the Silver Swords meet with Comigen and a few other of the nobility to discuss their situation, having cleared the air the group of settlers are allowed to enter the camp and purchase food.

The nobles share their experience with the Terland expedition and how they are able to maintain some of their magical artifacts, after speaking on the newer members of the Silver Swords, Comigen gets to business about hiring them for protection and in aiding in the search of some ruins in the Gorgelands beyond the ravine. Comigen tells them of a group of thirty-some adventurers that have aggressively requesting for more food in their dealings and takes the Silver Swords to the comical sight of the Undead that rise in the Gorgelands. Beholding the many undead stuck in the cycle of reanimation and then immediate collapse due to the lack of mana, the Silver Swords and the Terland Lords discuss an expedition into the ruins to find anything of value from this failed venture. Returning back to the rest of his group Ylawes speaks with them about their preparations for going into the ruins, one of the entrances to the ruins is an open staircase with Dawil deeming it to be of Drake origin as they enter. They travel through rooms full of deteriorating materials until they encounter an enchanted door, investigating around the door they come to find it surrounded by a glass-like material that is transparent. Having one of the Golems punch the door, a message in an unknown script appears, having the words ciphered they wonder at the context surrounding the words.

With the glass bricks still containing some weakened enchantments they have to dig at the mortar to make an opening to the other side, the [Miners] are requested to help with the digging as Comigen finds himself interested in joining further. After dissuading the Lord due to the unknown danger ahead, Ylawes goes to find Pekona who has disappeared, finding the [Blade Dancer] she brings up that the weapons they originally thought were bronze was in fact tarnished mithril. The two hide some of the mithril weapons under a pile of debris before telling the Terlands of their findings, passing through the entryway made they come to see that they are in some sort of fortress as they find many dormitories near what they assume to be the barracks. Going further they find remains of siege weapons and learn that within the area that they are regaining their magic. With newfound encouragement they head towards a light source finding an everburning torch, seeing picture frames on the wall that display a vision of the outside makes them think that this was some sort of sea fortress. As Ylawes touches one of the displayed pictures it suddenly changes to one of thunderstorms making a loud noise, with Pekona cutting the frame in half, Rasktooth announces that his [Dangersense] went off.

Rasktooth feels the eyes of something watching them from ahead, the group runs into multiple rooms that contained preserved furniture. Feeling something moving ahead of them Rasktooth informs the group again, Falene using [Detect Death] is able to sense six humanoid beings ahead of them so they ready themselves for a fight. Knowing that they've been discovered the six undead charge at the adventurers and are taken care of, moving on they enter a room full of dead bodies that were prepared to prevent them from rising. Within that room they find magical artifacts resting on the graves, preventing a disaster of a magical interference explosion they take little of what can be taken but then a Drake Golem arrives that destroys most of the Terland Golems that was with them, using his winged charged attack does Ylawes and the others manage to bind the Drake Golem down until another golem appears. Retreating back through their entryway the adventurers can see see that the drake golems are unable to perceive the opening that was made, returning back to the outside they recount what happened to Comigen. The Lord wants to immediately send those artifacts back for inspection but Ylawes brings up that they were owed half, knowing that they're between a rock and hard place Ylawes allows Comigen to purchase their half of the artifacts for in turn the Silver Swords are allowed to gather all the discarded weapons in the fortress they've found. Making their way back to base they come to find a group on horseback waiting for them.

Ylawes comes to find out that the thirty-some group of adventurers that the Terlands have been having trouble with are the same silver-rank teams that ran with the loot during the uncovering of the new section of the Ruins of Albez. They demand food for two weeks but Ylawes refuses stating that he gave his word, making a bluff of their own strength they are able to drive the adventuring silver-ranks away fear the loss of such a fight. The whole group gather all they can for their trip back to Goisdall, Ylawes eats his fill of food as he feels guilty for all the lying he has done. Waking up he finds a Drake with no eyes starting at him in the morning, Ylawes comes to find out the rest of his team are also having visions.

Nailren feels joy known that he's not the only one to have trouble with ghosts when he learns that the Silver Swords are facing the same problem as him, he learns from Nanette that the grey beings are ghasts that haunt people who they bare a grudge against. In a first set of calls they speak with Satar and Theikha to get some understanding of ghasts from the old stories told, then they speak with the [Witches] of Riverfarm who think it's a haunt and are interested in the ghosts coming back calling on Nailren to collect the spectral beings for them. Chatting with Elosaith was no help since he and his lot are more focused on the boney-kind of undead, lastly asking Fetohep for his knowledge he illuminates the dangers of these tombghasts and ways to deal with them to the two girls calling around. Nailren is grateful for the help and knowledge gathered by the two girls on how to deal with these annoying ghosts, feeling a sense of ease in a long while Nailren goes to sleep until one of the female ghosts shrieks right into his ear. The next day for Nailren hasn't gone any better as the ghasts are no longer disappearing and are repeatedly moaning the same words, during a time when the Gnoll was fishing he is suddenly pushed down into the water in an attempt to drown him. Being saved by Bekr, the two come to find that in the places the ghost had touched that the fur is completely frozen.

An emergency team of ghosts specialists, plus Joseph, is made to figure out a way for Nailren to deal with the ghasts since he was put in mortal jeopardy, a few ideas are brought up such as a circle of salt or using truegold weapons. Valeterisa shares of what she has gotten from the Hunter's Guild of Noelictus but their suggestions are outside of what's acceptable for now, Nanette mentions that Ylawes actually managed to stab one.

Ylawes's group and the Terlands are making their way back to Goisedall as most of the Silver Swords are being haunted by the ghasts ever since they grabbed the items from the ruins. Ylawes calls for a team meeting to figure out why Martz who was with them in their journeys underground isn't affected like they are, all that comes to mind were the mithril weapons they took. Speaking with Pekona she shares her thoughts saying that the owners of those weapons weren't laid to rest like those with the artifacts, suddenly blinding lights are shot out from Falene's tent with an angered drake ghost heading their way. The ghost stabs Pekona but she is safe from the talisman that she drew earlier, another ghost comes from behind with Ylawes somehow able to injure the ghost as its screams can be heard by all in the camp. He looks at his gravesword with it glowing a faint blue light as Pekona gains a new class as a [Charm Maiden].

While the charms at first were working well enough for Nailren, any attempt no matter the amount of charms after a day and a half fails to hold the ghosts back from harming him. Feeling desperate Nailren follows Joseph's suggestion of setting up a circle of salt around him being tremendously amazed to see it work, outside the circle he sees the four ghosts arguing about something. Him noticing them only drives the ghosts further into their rage, Nailren thinks about how to cross the communication barrier between him and the ghosts but is tired from all of it so decides to go to sleep to figure it out tomorrow.

The next day Nailren goes about experimenting to gather information about how to deal with these ghasts, he learns many things such as how they track someone, to the sensitivity of their range of senses, to how to capture their notice. In another experiment Nailren goes to figure out what can harm these ghosts, finding a few ways he can harm them he questions if he should go down the path with a blazing torch and steel in his hands or learn to speak as the wisest Gnolls once did. He begins to dig four graves as the ghosts start to attack him, once done sets the bodies in the graves and starts to speak to the ghosts as they listen to what he has to say. With what little he has the Gnoll writes down the given names to him by the ghosts on pieces of wood to set upon the graves with one of the female ghost being unable to give one. He thought this would be enough but as the sun rises he knew that it wasn't, saying a few final words to the ghosts giving them the offer to travel with him to find somewhere to be put to rest, the three named ghosts were able to pass on leaving the unnamed ghost behind. Nailren gives the remaining ghost the option to join him in his travels if she plays nice to which she accepts, the Gnoll smiles as he sets off with his new companion gaining a new class.
