Chapter 10.44 Z (Pt. 1) is the 90th chapter of Volume 10. The Z stands for Zevara Sunderscale.

  • Zevara feels out of place in the city she's known her whole life with all of the sweeping changes that have come to Liscor.
  • Zevara takes a night guard patrol to a hellhole bar to reminisce with folks who knew of older times how things used to be. While leaving the bar they get misconstrued as imposters by another Watch patrol causing an incident leading to Zevara being punished with a day off.
  • Zevara wastes her morning look for something to eat noticing even more changes that are happening to Liscor, eating at The Wandering Inn Zevara listens to the complaints of Rheirgest's [Necromancers], the Painted Antinium requesting to sell their holy book at the inn, and Joseph's talk with Randy.
  • Joseph notices Zevara's bike and shows the [Watch Captain] the speed at which the bike canr really be taken to giving Zevara something to kill time with.
  • With a lot of time left in the day, Zevara partakes in a bathhouse and while she leaves encounters Relc with the two talking about a number of things such as the recent Solstice Event to the current gangs like the Brotherhood of Serendipitous Meetings making a place for themselves in Liscor.
  • With less work than she was used to, Zevara goes down the list of dead cases with the first being Mister Soot's death, only that Mrsha reveals the truth of the matter to the [Watch Captain] leaving her befuddled. Lyonette, after engaging in her own minor Solstice Event, declares independence of The Wandering Inn from Liscor.
  • Continuing on with the list of dead cases she comes across a petty theft case involving an Antinium Worker, investigating the case leaves Zevara with the feeling of filth she once knew.
  • As she was writing her report, an Antinium called Noiraid arrives at her office requesting that she omit certain details and to not notify the Antinium leaders. Noiraid explains her job as a fixer for hire for Antinium problems and informs Zevara of the number of other thefts to Antinium property.
  • Zevara with Relc investigate the number of theft cases surrounding the Antinium but all avenues of pursuit leave them empty handed on how to continue any further.
  • A theft of a gear system on an expensive bike causes Zevara to chase after the [Thief] all the way to Celum through means of the magical door, there [Lord] Xitegen interrupts her arrest by using politics to let the [Thief] go free to the vexation of Zevara.
  • Summoned by Watch Commander Venim, Zevara shares the details of the theft to him but catches the names of his next appointment linking them to something related to one of the Antinium theft cases, there she learns that the two Drakes have been given certain clearances by Venim as they are a part of the Eyes of Pallass regardless of Liscor's laws.
  • The next day, Zevara is shocked to see that she's been assigned to a den bust on the Brotherhood of Serendipitous Meetings for the robbery of the Jewler's Guild, Zevara tries to urge Ronss to handle the confrontation differently but he ignores her words and calls forth the arrest and interrogation of the Brothers which they begin to retaliate causing a fight to ensue with it being clear that the Brotherhood is winning in the clash.

In the past during raining season, they would have used shield spider resin to plug up any leaks, but that technology was lost when the Necromancer's Siege of Liscor took place years ago. Many died due to him and the other wars but at the time when Erin arrived at Liscor, the population was at the same size as it previously was due to the immigration of many new groups such as the Silverfang Tribe and the Free Antinium. Zevara coughs up smoke in her room thinking of the remaining original Liscorians left, of Mister Soot dwindling power throughout the years and his mysterious death, and the 'good old days' on her mind, even with all of the changes that are coming to Liscor she feels out of touch with it all.

In a quiet mood, Zevara does a night patrol thinking on other bad cities and how close Liscor could've become like them, she meets with Jerci's patrol squad and teaches them how patrols during the night as it was done around five years ago and talks to them about the climate of Liscor and its citizens back then. They enter a hellhole bar called Corused Steer with Zevara ordering drinks asking for the [Bartender] Bobble, there she speaks with some of the folks on the more illicit side of things reminiscing of a different time. As Zevara and her group were leaving the bar, a separate Watch squad deemed them imposters and tries to apprehend them but fails to as Zevara is able to handle them until the truth of their situation comes to light to the rest of the incoming Watch. Venim and Zevara debrief on the mishap with him having to penalize the Watch Captain with a week of leave and for Relc to take her administrative position during that time, Zevara tries to argue the punishment but reluctantly accepts it. Walking out of new Watch Headquarters, Zevara feels so out of place from it all hoping that she'll adjust eventually, yet with everything clean and new, the city still felt dirty to her.

Having the day off breaks the routine Zevara has made having to force herself to get something to eat, going out to gets some breakfast she trips on the bike given to her by Kevin last winter. Getting the thing out of her second-floor apartment, Zevara reads the instructions to learn how to ride the bicycle, after a bit of difficulties learning Zevara zips through the streets nearly getting in trouble a few times only to find out that her regular food place is no longer in business as it was bought out. She then sees Mottleshell set up a new store sign right above her head, she tries to partake in Mottleshell's Pet Café but comes to realizes that the food appeals to Antinium sensibilities more than anything else. Leaving the shop, she comes to find that her bike was stolen seeing a few Antinium chases after the thief, apprehending the Drake thief she learns that there are others bike makers now which he runs a chop-shop job from those bikes, Zevara lets the boy go and pedals off searching for food.

Everywhere Zevara went she would find all the food stalls full of people waiting in line, she tried to eat at a Watch House but gets denied entry due to Venim's orders, she finds herself cycling through Shivertail Plaza wondering if the Council meeting vendor had any food. Hearing Liska announcing departures for Pallass, Zevara decides to have breakfast at The Wandering Inn and speaks with the [Doorgnoll] about how she's been and such, sitting down and eating her food she locks into a conversation nearby hearing one of Rheirgest's [Necromancers] complain about the pricing of everything. Ishkr walks up to Shommel and offers Rheirgest's lot a generous offer of a 50% discount on anything bought from the inn, Zevara was tempted to ask for the same deal but fought her impulses to keep in line with her Watch Captain image and ordered a Dragonbreath Red to make herself more receptive to certain stimuli from her red skill. Zevara sees Lyonette being solicited by the Painted Antinium to sell their holy book through the inn as other vendors have refused, Lyonette goes over the poor craftsmanship of the book themselves causing Holytext to have an outburst.

Exiting the outhouse, Zevara is unsure if she should leave The Wandering Inn or not until she hears a conversation from Joseph with somebody named Randy, returning to the inn she sits down with the two Earthers noticing her. Joseph comes by to distract her with Zevara offering him a drink just remembering that he is a reformed alcoholic, they share how they deal with the temptation and how Liscor's football team is doing. Joseph points out the bike in the hallway with Zevara sharing she got it as a gift from Kevin and that it'll be the first gift she'll keep, Joseph mentioned that none of Kevin's clients never made his bikes go zoom piquing her interests. Joseph on the flat trade roads outside of Pallass shows Zevara the speed her bike can reach, with something new to kill time she catches the Magical Door to Esthelm and rides her way back to Liscor and then takes a long soak in one of the local bathhouses.

Woebegone, Zevara realizes that she still has a few hours left to kill time as it is 3 PM, she contemplates what she should do thinking on Kevin and the changing wave of Liscor. She sees Relc and Valeterisa exiting from the private baths, with Valeterisa leaving for Invrisil headhunting for [Mages], Relc and Zevara slowly make their way to The Wandering Inn with the two talking about the latest Solstice Event, the thriving and naive nature of the Antinium, and Zevara's venture into the Steer. Relc thinks, with what Valeterisa shares with him, that Liscor is going to be the next big thing, so the gangs are absorbing new blood building up until everyone becomes active soon. They then catch sight of a group of four looking for a mark to hit a score on but are dissuaded by a Brother from Serendipitous Meetings guarding the caravan from going any further. Zevara leaves the Brotherhood alone for now because she doesn't want to shake down a group that hasn't crossed the line yet without any proof, here she comes to understand that Relc has adapted to the changes coming to Liscor unlike her making her feel tired enough to go to sleep.

The next morning, Zevara walks back to her job to see Relc there doing paperwork quite aptly, with less work to do Zevara scrambles to find anything to keep her busy, she finds the dead crimes list as something to do she chooses to investigate the mysterious death of Mister Soot. Her search begins with the first witness, Mrsha, who explains that it was Nokha and her Raskghar that killed him and that she should ask the Raskghar imprisoned by Pallass for any further proof. Zevara then goes outside to see a horde of Undead fighting each other with the [Princess] having a Solstice Event of her own, Arrema gives her assessment on the situation that the chemath marble is empowering her Bush Shamblers which is somehow giving Lyonette the Undead's servitude. Geillsten then arrives to do their job as a [Tax Collector], as he was about to calculate how much is owed, he is blinded by a blaring light and then tackled down by Yelroan with the [Mathematician] Gnoll destroying the documents. Zevara request that they unhand their [Tax Collector] with Lyonette obliging and informs the two that The Wandering Inn has declared independence from Liscor moving forward.

Zevara reports the recent news to Venim with Liscor's Council becoming up in arms about it as the use of the magical door is currently up in the air, with that squared away Zevara continues to go through the dead case list, but everyone keeps asking the inn and the magical door. Last on the list is a petty theft case, arriving at the street she meets with [Carpenter] Laikos gaining a sense of the filth that she once knew. Hearing from the Worker Antinium, while they were working, they were knocked down with their personal item, a doll, being taken by a Human woman who ran away. Zevara informs Laikos that it's unlikely for their personal possession to be returned making Laikos angered to the point of him beginning to show signs of Aberration with the other Antinium there carrying him away. She follows after them affirming to the Drake [Carpenters] that everything was alright, she sees the lot bring Laikos to the entrance to the Hive where she can no longer follow observing that nobody else noticed the Antinium being taken in.

Zevara returns to her office to write a report about the incident think about the case when an Antinium calling herself Noiraid arrives at her office requesting an alteration on her report and to not inform any of the Antinium in charge. Noiraid expresses that Laikos will return to work and not be an Aberration making Zevara asks for an explanation and assurances that there won't be an Aberration loose in the city. The Antinium shares that Aberration is the maximum limit of anger an Antinium can suppress before they become homicidal and that she'll take measures so that Laikos won't go over the edge. Noiraid tells Zevara that her job is to solve problems for the Antinium for a price, Zevara questions how Noiraid will fix the problem with Laikos with her explaining that she'll simply give him another doll at the cost of the other Antinium Workers there receiving nothing, but that someone can donate so that it'll become slightly fairer. Before giving her coin, Zevara asks if there have been any more thefts against Antinium with Noiraid, perplexed by the Drake's interest, saying that there's been an increasing amount thefts after the Solstice giving Zevara a few names of the victims. Giving a hint as to why someone would steal from the Antinium, Noiraid leaves the Watch House leaving Zevara and Relc then next day to begin their investigations.

Zevara and Relc interview a number of Antinium not finding much until they meet Crusader 344-2 or now known as Lerhne that while they were selling stuff that someone working for a [Merchant] Y and a [Lady] tried to snatch one of the scrolls they were selling. Using Relc's suggestion, the two meet with Ekha at Krshia's shop to get information about their two suspects, they get the name of the [Merchant] Yerham whose been wanting to buy a number a things from Honored Deskie. Arriving at Deskie's Mill, they pass through the spinning and combing of shockwoolie wool into a workshop where Deskie is unraveling hidden magical thread in ugly clothing, something that was done by [Weavers] of the past as a challenge. They speak to Deskie about Yerham's dealings when they hear a disturbance from outside, it's [Lady] Cecille unceremoniously requesting to commission a dress from the mill. Zevara interrogates Cecille but doesn't get much out of the [Lady] with the truth stone not revealing much either, they then decide to go to the Merchant's Guild to go speak with Yerham.

At the Merchant's Guild, the two speak with Yerham questioning him about his dealings in Liscor, they trying to inquire into his involvement into the thefts of Antinium property but are quickly stymied from any further probing due to a vague question of Zevara's part. They know that the man is suspicious but have to leave for now, as Zevara was getting on her bike a [Trader] from the Merchant's Guild comes out calling her a thief. The [Trader], Beneckham, accidentally mistook his bike for Zevara's bike as many tried to take his bike before, as he shows his bike to Zevara she notices that someone had hacked off the gear system recently with Zevara calling for everyone on the street to pause as they do inspections on Bags of Holding. Someone suspicious catches their interests but Zevara realizes that it's a decoy and chases after the real thief, Zevara pursues after the man all the way to Celum through the magical door and tackles the [Thief] down from the long chase. Grabbing the gears and rummaging through the [Thief]'s thing to find his employer she finds a ring with the unfamiliar emblem embossed on it. The commotion summons a security Golem and [Lord] Xitegen himself who commends Zevara for endurance and takes notice of the [Thief]'s ring making Xitegen use politics as a way to make the criminal go free in Human lands to the vexation of Zevara.

Returning with no [Thief], Zevara is summoned by Venim to discuss the chase, while the two talk a pair of nondescript Drakes arrive at Venim's office with names she recognizes from Lerhne's case. Zevara questions the two about any knowledge they have of the thefts going around but gets nothing much out of them, she's dismissed from the room and on a hunch asks the [Receptionist] to give her the times of Moass and Hissl's entries and exits into Liscor. The [Receptionist] tries to find the data but comes up blank for either of them, Venim comes out of his office to explain that they were given clearance as they are a part of the Eyes of Pallass to the shock and anger of Zevara, retracting her emotions the [Watch Captain] can only muster up empty platitudes about the spy organization of Pallass. In the middle of the night, Zevara goes down to the Mage's Guild requesting information about the emblem in the [Thief]'s possession, she comes to find out it's the crest of the El Family making her wonder why are they in Liscor.

Zevara the next day returns to work carrying a number of injuries with Beilmark reaffirming that she hasn't lost her way as a Watch Captain and has brought Guardsman Cossl with him. Speaking with the Drake, Zevara can tell that Cossl isn't the crooked sort and considered putting the Antinium thefts back into the dead case list with no further avenues of leads. Reading a report on her desk, Zevara becomes alarmed that a den bust on the Brotherhood of Serendipitous Meetings for the gem robbery incident had been ordered with her taking part in it. Meeting with Senior Guardsman Ronss, Zevara speaks with him trying to understand the situation as the whole group of the Watch make their way to the den spot. There they meet with the Brotherhood's representative wearing a top hat who is all willing to comply with the Watch with having their bar inspected saying that they don't have the gems as something that valuable would've been sold on the same day as the theft. Ronss angered and unwilling to lose face orders for the capture and interrogation of the Brotherhood members there ignoring Zevara's calls to de-escalate, the Brothers unwilling to be arrested begin to retaliate causing a massive brawl between the two groups. Zevara does her best to fight non-lethally and protect her fellow Guardsman by calling a retreat back to the main street as it is clear that the Brothers are winning, getting herself out of a poor position Zevara sees the Brothers' representative with the top hat from earlier charging straight towards her.
