Interlude – The Innkeeper’s [Knight] is the 83rd chapter of Volume 7 and the 8th chapter of Book 20.

  • Rabbiteater and the Knights try and break out but fail when General Yerzhen intervenes.
  • Kids play "Attack Liscor" in the Inn and Erin sees their impression of her. Altestiel asks Erin permission to court her, over a game of chess, since he has been called home.
  • Talia apologizes to Rabbiteater and tells him her family will pay his ransom. He tries to confess to the Knights, then asks Talia to remember her promise.
  • The women of the Inn come out in force to help Erin get ready, give advice and relax, although Hexel relaxes her most of all.
  • The Earl takes Erin for a walk above the Flood Plain on a water bridge, as they return Erin is bombarded by other suitors vying for her affection.
  • A Runner comes to to take Erin to the Mages Guild to ransom Ser Solstice.
  • Lasica talks to Garry about the competition, and standing, for Erin's affection.
  • After settling the ransom Erin lets Altestiel down easy, over a game of Go, and witness's his sulking first hand... a little.
  • Ser Solstice is grabbed by the mage and guards, who cast silence spells on the other Knights, and taken to find out who is under the helmet.
  • Erin physically causes an earthquake throwing her [Boon of the Guest] to Rabiteater, just as the mage and guards attack.
  • Ser Solstice fights his way out toward the other Knights where he is cut of by General Yershin, who challenges him to a dual. Zel coaches Rabbit through the fight, even keeping him from drawing blood, pointing out that its a dual not death.
  • Sometime during the dual Ser Solstice's visor is stuck open, revealing his face, Ser Markus and Dame Talia see before Markus points it out to Rabbiteater.

Rabbiteater and the Order of Seasons' [Knights] make a failed escape attempt, and [General] Yerzhin of Ailendamus orders them to be ransomed. Talia Kallinad offers to have her family pay his ransom, but Rabbiteater is certain they'll remove his helmet and kill him. Unsatisfied with extracting a ransom from House Kallinad, Ailendamus' ransomers interrogate Rabbiteater to find more people who might pay for his release and eventually send a message to the Wandering Inn. Erin has a 3-way conversation with the ransomer and Rabbiteater, immediately agreeing to pay 300gp for his release. Earl Altistiel guarantees the ransom immediately.

Meanwhile, Earl Altestiel asks to court Erin after being ordered to return home. She's shocked and flustered, but eventually agrees. A group of her female friends tries to prepare her as some of her male friends (or potential romantic partners) start trying to court her as well, starting with Garry baking her a cake so she doesn't leave. Altestiel shows up after she has a bit to prepare, summoning a gentle rain and rainbows, and using his skills to walk on bridges made of water, taking Erin on a walk. Erin begins to consider relationships, and starts imagining good days and bad ones with various of her suitors, making her very uncomfortable. After Altistiel pays Rabbiteater's ransom, they play Go and discuss what love is, with Erin ultimately rejecting him. Altistiel takes it well, sulking only a little that he's being ordered back home.

Some of the soldiers in Ailendamus' camp decide to violate their agreement and take off Rabbiteater's helmet anyway, since some people were willing to pay for that information. Erin senses Rabbiteater in danger, and uses [Boon of the Guest: Zel Shivertail] on him. The soldiers pry Rabbiteater's helmet off and he kills them. The other [Knights] stage an escape, angry that their captors are breaking their honor. Rabbiteater has a fistfight with General Yerzhen, with Zel Shivertail and Erin coaching him and helping him get back up. He beats Yerzhen, and the [Knights] escape. Ser Markus and a few other [Knights] see Rabbiteater with his visor up, and rather than abandoning him, Markus gets him a new helmet.
