Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Four characters have a focus this chapter: Niers, Ryoka, Numbtongue, and Pisces.

Niers is first. With Foliana recovered, and Niers himself returned to Baleros, the war with Jungle Tails has turned in his favor. The two still want vengeance, but Niers has to deal with the consequences of his trip to Izril. First, he has a meeting with the fraerlings that are staying in Elvallian. They are all very unhappy about the fate of Oierdressql and the lack of a proper response for Paeth with some even saying that they wanted to break their alliance with the Forgotten Wing Company. Niers needed these allies, so he requested time to think of a way to make amends. Soon after, he went to his second meeting where he met with Shaik from the Ghostly Hand Tribe. He wanted the ghost shrooms from her, and wanted an alliance, but she refused citing his warmongering tendencies as a major reason. Later on, Niers went to Talenqual to meet with his students and the fraerling city there. The city was under the protection of Gravetender's Fist and the United Nations with a combined council of Fraerlings and Tallfolk speaking for Paeth. The group had decided that they would not be moving back and that they would also not be allying with the Forgotten Wing Company. What they did want Niers for was to find Geneva who had been kidnapped by the Bodies of Fellden. After the day of rejection, Niers flew back to Elvallian, dejected. Once he got back and related his failings to Foliana, she threw him into the fraerways where he landed in a meeting with a group of new fraerlings. They turned out to represent a coalition of sixteen fraerling cities that were in Elvallian to have a neutral headquarters where they could hold Jungle Tails to account for their actions against fraerlings and to find a plan to deal with the Dyed Lands' expansion.

On Terandria, Ryoka has been imprisoned for weeks by Rhisveri. He has her trapped in an illusion of a prison cell and is repeatedly admonishing her about the death of Filthea. The emotional abuse and guilt hurt Ryoka, but Rhisveri is not allowed to physically harm her. Eventually, Ryoka does see through the illusion enough to get Rhisveri to speak with her face to face. He still wants to kill her, but he lets her go with pleas to appeal to his baser instincts by bribing him or giving him a good reason as to why she should be let free. Later on, Rhisveri found his reason. He would let her go with one condition: Within ten years Ryoka must find a new dryad and bring them to Ailendamus to replace Filthea. Until that time Ryoka must never set foot in the kingdom, and if she fails in the time allotted she will be killed. Just as she was being let go and considering the fact that Ryoka may in fact know where a dryad is, Teriarch breached the country's teleportation wards. The immortals present took it as an attack, but for Teriarch it was pure laziness in not wanting to fly around.

The other two perspectives were Numbtongue and Pisces both of whom spent much of their time together. Pisces was having the toughest time recovering from his time as a slave in Chandrar. He had survivor's guilt and was very worried about his new friends as well as how much he'd changed. He hadn't told anybody about his time there yet, and he wanted to tell Erin, but could never work up the courage. Eventually, Erin sent Pisces, Numbtongue, and Tessa out to take a bath since neither of them were regular bathers, and Pisces finally broke down. He told Numbtongue about his troubles, and Numbtongue promised to tell Erin that the two needed to talk. When they went back, Pisces felt better. Numbtongue went to get Erin immediately, but at the same time his team came back from Invrisil where they had been discussing the loot distribution for the raid on the Village of the Dead. Erin went with realizing that the two needed to talk. Together, Erin, Pisces, Numbtongue, and a whole host of guards went into the city of adventurers. Erin's plan was to confuse people until she got to the adventurer's guild at which point she would desensitize people to the mentions of goblin and necromancer by making those present recognize that they are still people underneath their species and class. It didn't go well until Pisces received a priority letter from Pomle with messages from all of his friends and Erin finally explained her reasoning. Only then did adventurers start to approach Pisces and greet or thank him properly. The guild got even more rowdy when a scrying orb went to find Ksmvr for being one of Noa's favorite adventurers and happened to catch Pisces. Noa commented that necromancers weren't reviled in Paeth, and more people including a small group of [Necromancers] greeted Pisces. Numbtongue had been trying to make songs for the people around him the whole time, and with this chaotic event he'd finally found what he'd needed to make the [Ballad of the Horns of Hammerad].
