Chapter 8.29 is the 36th chapter of Volume 8.

The Aftermath of the Attack edit edit source

The immediate focus is on the consequences of Belavierr's attack, which included the defeat of an army, the resurfacing of the dungeon's threat, and the kidnapping of the child, Mrsha. The event is compared to a great natural disaster.

  • Grief and Guilt: Lyonette du Marquin is overwhelmed with grief and screams, attempting to run to Pallass, while Numbtongue is consumed by guilt over his second failure to protect Mrsha.
  • The Brothers: The Brothers of Serendipitous Meetings collect their dead, stating that the debt they owed to the inn and its owner, Erin, has been paid, and they will not be returning.
  • Antinium Chaos: The Antinium Hive is in disarray due to Xrn being wounded and Klbkch, Pawn, and the Free Queen being unavailable. Pawn (the [Priest]) survives a poisoned arrow and learns from the Listeners that Mrsha was taken South.
  • The Vultures: Multiple factions—including Wistram, Reinhart, and Pallass—begin to circle, trying to pull the Earthers (Joseph, Imani, Palt) to their respective cities since the inn is no longer considered safe.

The chapter also covers how major powers react to the attack on The Wandering Inn.

  • Liscor Council: Councilmember Lism Swifttail argues forcefully against taking direct action against Belavierr, fearing that attacking her would lead to Liscor's destruction. He advises focusing all resources on Hectval, the aggressive nation that also attacked the city.
  • Pallass Grand Strategist Chaldion: Chaldion convenes top Generals to assess the situation.
    • He notes that the Antinium Worker Pawn must be ranked as a "Galadz-threat" (just below the Centenium) due to his unknown abilities against Belavierr.
    • He decides not to interfere with the Titan Niers Astoragon being present in Liscor, choosing to view it as a silent favor he can call upon later.
    • Chaldion concludes that since the inn is no longer safe, he must act to move the Earthers to Pallass, focusing on securing Kevin, Joseph, Imani, and Palt.
  • Wistram Academy: The Archmages debate what to do about the Earthers and Belavierr.
    • Archmage Valeterisa is primarily interested in contacting Belavierr to negotiate for her ancient magical knowledge.
    • Grand Magus Eldavin agrees to bring the Earthers to Wistram, noting that the inn is unsafe. He appears to have significant memory gaps regarding Belavierr and other major figures, a result of his near-death experience with Cognita. Valeterisa is disappointed in his changed values and lack of focus on pure magic.

🏃 Ryoka Griffin and the Promise edit edit source

Ryoka Griffin is suffering from the "red lightning" curse/injury she sustained earlier and is nearly delirious with guilt over not being there to protect Mrsha.

  • Tortured: She is in so much pain she is crawling out of bed and sweating blood.
  • The Bargain: She desperately tells her caretakers to contact Laken Godart (The Emperor of the Drakes) and, more importantly, Wiskeria, who is Belavierr's estranged daughter.
  • Wiskeria's Deal: Wiskeria is reached and proceeds to have a conversation with her mother (Belavierr) via her magical hat. She eventually strikes a deal where Belavierr forswears all harm (physical, mental, and magical) to Mrsha for thirty years in exchange for Wiskeria writing her two letters every four months, plus a baked good.
  • Final Call: Before passing out, Ryoka sends a secret [Message] to the Vampire Fierre val Lischelle-Drakle, telling her to "use everything" to find and save Mrsha.

The vampire Fierre arrives at the inn, which is being abandoned by nearly everyone. She sees the destruction and the grief of the regulars.

  • She is ready to use the full might of her heritage, which she has been waiting to do.
  • The chapter ends with Fierre's determination to go after Mrsha, while the other regulars, like Numbtongue and Badarrow, prepare to hunt Belavierr themselves.
