Synopsis edit edit source

A journal entry written by Nerry in Sariant Lamb chicken scratch delineates how the Pathforger system on the Izrillian colonies of Sariant Lambs work and of her current actions and observations of the pathfriends she has met at her time in The Wandering Inn and abroad. While in her time in Baleros she writes of the ups and downs of the Human body compared to one of a Sariant Lamb, what the others like Ryoka are doing, and that she thinks Niers already catching on that she's a fake.

During one of the Titan's classes, Niers picks on Nerry-Erin by asking her questions of strategy with the constant badgering seeming to her to as a way to tear down her facade. Niers presents a scenario of facing against charging [Knights] with [Light Bridge] spells mostly disappointed with his students' answer being too defensive and boring. Niers then brings up another scenario of leading loyal Calanferian soldiers up against a contingent of a higher level and better armed Drake battalion, choosing Nerry-Erin she shares her plans on how she would deal with the Drake force with Niers giving her a 50% odds of working.

The students engage in the school's practical wargames with the volunteer soldiers, Nerry-Erin faces against Kissilt's forces as she retreats uphill, she wins as Kissilt and his forces are pelted with arrows from her archers as he got distracted with a seemingly easy victory. Niers remarks on her victory with Kissilt asking how she is so good at leading troops, she gives him a lie while the dark emotions of her time as a Pathforger for her colony leading them into many pyrrhic battles festers. While laughing to herself about the Lucifen pact she made with Paxere instead of the real Erin, Ryoka appears starting to share of the work she's been doing to find their friends with the rest of the group Nerry-Erin believes she can rely on following right after. They speak of the current situation with the Forgotten Wing Company fighting two wars with Ryoka leaving to wait for anymore news from Niers when he has some free time, then one of the panting [Soldiers] staggers away and tosses acid at Nerry-Erin hitting her in the chest. Nerry-Erin lays down in bed from what Geneva could do to help, she writes down the event grinning knowing that it's her and not Erin receiving it.

Ryoka is a ball of anxious jitters as all the growth she's done since Reizmelt reverts back ever since she has arrived on Baleros, she enters Nerry-Erin's room and confronts her about what's really going on thinking that it's Ulvama underneath the veneer. After being laughed off by Nerry-Erin and the Fae, Ryoka finds herself moping in the Runner's Guild of the Lizardfolk town of Mixmelt requesting information of a forest nearby as she gets dressed down for a number of autographs by the Guildmaster. The winds of Baleros were not kind to Ryoka as they were fierce and unpredictable with its moods as Shaestrel explain it as the winds being unfamiliar with her unlike Izril's breeze; arriving at the middle of a forest, Erek calls out to the local simian tribe to make contact. One of the Golden female Gorillas is angry at Ryoka for some reason and she finds out that Erek doesn't know the Gorilla's language as they pantomime to one another, Ryoka offers her food and a magical flask that make cold water which pleases the Matriarch of the Golden Band Tribe. While the Matriarch, given the name Smoothie by Ryoka, and Erek try to talk, the gorilla that's angry at Ryoka, dubbed Pusher, makes constant attempts to scare Ryoka away leading to the breaking of talks for another time with the two traveling back to Elvallian. As they fly, Ryoka learns that Erek was trying to recruit the tribe as reinforcements, feeling useless and out of sorts Ryoka tried to find where Tyrion is at.

Geneva is rather disappointed that Ryoka and Erin failed to meet her expectations of them, she goes over a patient report she made and can see that there's not much she could do other than research, even viewing how the Fraerlings heal she equates it to 'just use superior magic' but disapproves of them not trying to finding a root cause and solution to the issue. Geneva overhears Niers pester and bully Ryoka to scout out a region in the Dyed Lands for him with Nerry-Erin trying to poke hole in his request, Rozcal and the other Fraerlings look over the maps of the battle against the Dyed Lands as they watch Ryoka steadily make her way to the Green-Zone with Niers requesting Geneva to review their notes of the parasitic monsters they have faced. Through one of the scrying orbs, Niers speaks with Aria, the Bannermare, as she complains about wanting to advance forwards against the Green Monsters today until she sees that the flying scout is the Wind Runner and accepts waiting for a bit. Ryoka flies high above giving Niers and Aria a good look at the horde of monsters down below with a very threatening one visible, Ryoka drops her payloads for the two commanders to observe the capabilities of the threat when one of the unnamed Winter Fae warns her to turn back as further in is full of magic and danger.

As Ryoka was doing another pass along a new section, a beam of light is visible from below with it being three Lizardfolk survivors, one being an uninfected child, even knowing that it's a trap Ryoka goes forth to save the child with the help of the Winter Faes and the Serpentborn of Jungle Tails. The world reacts to the Wind Runner of Reizmelt descending onto the horde of monsters with the playing of music by the Singer of Terandria can be heard. Ryoka with the child in her arms erupt out of the swarm of serpents immersed in pink flames, as the Courier passes through Maelstrom’s Howling's army, Aria and Uenoix uses a tactic that engulfs the chasing serpents in flames. Many cheers as Ryoka arrives at the Maelstrom Howling camp with Niers sending orders to Geneva to get ready to treat or converse with Aria's [Healers] and quietly remarks that there goes using her as a scout anymore. Speaking with the child, Ryoka promises to take her somewhere safe once she's been checked up, Aria arrives commending Ryoka for her bravery and gives her a piece of her hair to the envy of the men there. Ryoka then realizes that she has gained the interest of someone important and powerful yet again.

Nerry writes down another entry about Ryoka's stunt and how everyone has misjudged the Wind Runner forgetting about the other great, valorous deeds that she has accomplished. Ponder on Ryoka's strange charisma and conversation with Aria, Nerry comes to see how one should interact with Centaurs and goes to sleep to think on how she should get closer to her troops. While she was writing she is suddenly summoned by Erin into the [Pavilion of Secrets], full of fear of how Erin would react to her acting in her place she shares the secret and cause of the Sariant Lambs to the [Innkeeper]. Nerry can see that Erin is melting away, literally and figuratively, full of worry for her friends not sure if she'll be strong enough for next time, not any of the pride or wrath Nerry would've expected after killing Iradoren. At the end of the conversation, Erin gives Nerry her blessing by imprinting upon her [Boon of the Guest: Erin Solstice], full of jitters Nerry plans to tell the truth to Ryoka, and maybe to Niers as well.

Gaining [Wondrous Fare] and Erin's chess mastery, Nerry reforms her image of Erin to be less of a monster to people and to genuinely smile more as she thoroughly beats everyone in chess. Needing an excuse for her sudden want of playing chess Nerry joins Geneva, Beth, and Okasha in an outing at a bar, using playing poorly at games of darts Nerry-Erin offers to play games of chess with the others there. Beating the Bushrangers six games at once blindfolded, Nerry-Erin begins her reign of terror on the chessboard beating many and tying Niers multiple times until she wins one over him. Getting it out of her system, Nerry-Erin takes Ryoka aside to tell her the truth of who she is, the pact she made with Paxere and apologizes for how she acted earlier, Ryoka yells at the Fae for not telling her sooner and begins to connect the dots in regards to Erek and the Trials of Levelling. Nerry shares of her meeting with the actual Erin explaining to the Runner what went down in detail. Now having Ryoka on her side, Nerry begins to remake a few of Erin's magical recipes with what ingredients they have at Baleros producing a number of each for her subordinates. Daly and the other Bushrangers comes to join in on the eating and singing Nerry-Erin is doing with Siri, Nerry-Erin lays down the order of command in their mixed fighting force and speaks with the leaders of her merry band about the general outline their group will be having for the foreseeable future. As Nerry-Erin goes to find Erek, Beth walks besides her to share her worries with Nerry-Erin understanding and explain her views on the matter.

They find Erek with Filax, the surviving Lizardgirl from the Green Zone, who has a number of serpents attached throughout her body embedded into her nervous system. Nerry-Erin shares with Octavia that she plans to leave Elvallian to go help Rabbiteater making it clear of the difference of opinion they have with one another on the topic of war and battle. Nerry-Erin points out that a certain singer of renown has went off course from their trip to the New Lands of Izril heading straight for southern Baleros as she is friends with a certain Calanferian [Princess]. Switching topics, an oddity Geneva has found within the Forgotten Wing Company's medical records points to something nefarious done by the Jungle Tails to children in the location of Oelnnox. Both Nerry-Erin and Geneva shake hands to go and witness what's there with Nerry-Erin going to Niers to go ask for permission first.

Nerry-Erin, Fraerling-sized, finds Niers drinking not in a good mood after losing half an army to an ambush, he brings up ciphers and the two have a fun time chatting about it not bringing up Nerry-Erin's journal into the mix. She mentions her trip to Oelnnox with him warning of the dangers that trip will have but knows that she'll go even if he refuses. Venaz enters Niers's study bearing a message from the House of Minos about a passage he had written in his book "Goblin [Mercenaries]", the name of the chapter is "Parlaying with Goblin tribes" which bring a whole bunch of speculations on what Inreza plans to do with the Minotaurs' war against the Isle of Goblins. Niers goes into the complexity and nuance of the issue with Venaz having an outburst causing Nerry-Erin to act out in turn. After letting go of the Minotaur out of an armlock, Nerry-Erin barters with Niers on which of his top students will go with her on her travels with the two saying their goodbyes. Nerry writes her next entry about the general area of where everyone is as her group travel towards Oelnnox, her thoughts about Niers's connection to Kanadith and for her to potentially further enact Erin's will.

Ryoka finds Tyrion getting hit in the head as he leads his forces through Maelstrom's Howling forces harassing him with him remember from his family's records to never joust against Centaurs, meeting with the Veltras [Lord] they catch up with the Centaurs asking for parlay. As camp is made, Ryoka notices the difference between the current Tyrion and his older self, in strength and physicality, and sequesters away the man for a private debriefing when sadly Pellmia fails his Class and interrupts the lovers' meeting. Tyrion, Pellmia, and Ryoka meet with the Keirgrass Hooves Company and its leader Revvan to discuss safe passage through their lands or at least no more harassment. Ryoka using her fame and logic tries to compromise with the Centaurs but said the wrong word which angers Revvan, they then learn they did all of this was because Revvan wanted to gain the Bammermare's attention by doing little favors like obstructing "Terandrians". With that out of the way the two groups begin to interact with Rethra teaching Tyrion how to fight against a Centaur in jousting while also trying to flirt with the dense [Lord] failing.

Having a private moment, Tyrion and Ryoka engage in acts of pleasure when the Runner learns of Tyrion's penchant to fornicate only on the weekends. Shifting the topic away from his dead wife, Ryoka begins to focus on Tyrion's puritan views to expand his narrow mindset about sex and other adjacent topics. Tyrion compares his interactions with Ryoka to Salva seeing the similarity yet differences the two have, Ryoka shares her thoughts about wanting to help others waiting for whatever is coming next asking him to be there for her when she's tired to which he accepts. As the Centaurs and the Veltras soldiers feast during the night, Tyrion, following Ryoka's request, ask Pellmia questions that were pointed out to him to see what his fellow [Lord] has to say on the matter. The [Lord of Love and Wine], through the lenses of someone who can actually see affection, expresses his opinion so that Tyrion can understand the nuances of sexual desire and homosexuality in their society and the greater world. To make the most of the night before she leaves in the morning, the two lovers have copious amounts of sex with Pellmia gaining a rather funny new skill.

Dealing with some chafing pains, Ryoka lands in an open clearing and applies some ointment to her nether region, while putting on her pants to get ready to fly again Visophecin steps out from behind a tree. Full of humiliation and anger, Ryoka flies away with Visophecin chasing after her, after shooting down her glider does she nearly crash land with him catching her. He expresses that Rhisveri's orders doesn't apply to him and that he has come to her to help her fulfill her pact questioning her understanding of the situation. She does on over him by knowing more than him and then hugs the Lucifen for the loss to House Shoel, Visophecin shares that he can feel where Erin is that from the bond they once held and cannot feel regret nor guilt but feels weariness of Erin as she had bested him. He points out the many allies she's gather would be great once they have the Dryad seed, Ryoka tasks Visophecin to obtain the Ironwood Wand and gather any helpful information to aid in its planting. Parting ways Ryoka goes on to fly while Visophecin decides to partake in romance-slop literature on his travels to Izril, while sitting at a café he finds a Centaur selling gelato claiming that King Loran was the first to create the recipe which is not physically possible in the Lucifen's eyes.

With Ryoka returning, Nerry needles the Runner a bit about Tyrion before the two of them and Erek fly to the Gorilla tribe again, they speak about Erin's and Ulvama's situation knowing that if the two stick together that they'll have a chance in the wilds. The two try to translate Erek's intent with the Gorillas as the size of the tribe is enough to win any battles so there must be some other reason for the attempt in recruitment. Meeting the Golden Band Tribe, Nerry uses the knowledge and power harnessed by the Sariant Lambs to read into other species; she sees that the Gorillas are very weary after the many skirmishes with the Lizardfolks not willing to give up their home. Erek is considered an outsider yet a wise explorer that has asked hard of them for the many goods that he offers them point to Nerry as an example of someone who is also facing the Trials of Levelling. While Ryoka shows the Gorillas how to set up a tent, Pusher arrives shoving her hard enough to give her a bloody nose, Nerry can understand Pusher's pain and isolationist ways but knows that would get in the way of Pathforgers and goads the Gorilla to a fight. Nerry awakens to find herself being punched stuck underneath Pusher, furious Ryoka threatens Pusher to get off her friend calling on the winds of Baleros to create a miniature cyclone in her hand. Pusher charges only to receive a flying kick to the chest that knocks her away, losing Pusher runs away into the forest with negotiations between the two groups becoming successful. Seeing the melancholic faces of some of the Gorillas, Nerry and Ryoka come to learn that the Goldstreak Gorillas will contact all the Simian Tribes to gather up their forces to give their kind a chance of advancing their own Trials of Levelling.

The three return to Elvallian to wash up and have a final dinner before they leave tomorrow. Writing down an emergency update in her journal as they were on the road to Oelnnox, Nerry writes down that they have an Earther to rescue as the ship Cara was in has done down off the eastern coast of Baleros.
